Travers Dow: Delibertus Quirkus

The Fremont Fair Parade:
June 18th and 19th 2011

'Founded in 1972, the Fremont Fair is one of Seattle’s most beloved neighborhood street festivals, featuring a weekend of eclectic activities that celebrate the quirky community of Fremont, the self-proclaimed “center of the universe.” Held annually in mid-June to coincide with the Summer Solstice, the event draws more than 100,000 people to shop, eat, drink, mingle, groove, and enjoy all manners of creative expression. Artistic highlights include craft and art booths, street performers, local bands, wacky decorated art cars, the free-spirited Solstice Parade produced by the Fremont Arts Council, and many other oddities that personify Fremont’s official motto “Delibertus Quirkus” – Freedom to be Peculiar'

Every summer people gather and paint their bodies, or paint the body of another, for the annual Fremont Parade in Seattle. Photographer Travers Dow whom I profiled last month (Memorable: Rob Connoll By T-W-D photos), shares his photos from this years event. Travers says this year, dispute the cold and wet weather, this years participants were creative and fun with one of his favorites being Blue Tick guy (last photo below), 'he has done it the last three years or so - last year he was Space Ghost.'

The increase in popularity also means an increase in not only spectators but spectators and their cameras. This year Travers reports there were tons of cameras.

'It is great to see people supporting their local art community and taking part in events that come up - not everything happens on TV or in the movies or indeed on the internet ;-) There were a lot of people who came out to this event and Seattle Pride as well. I'm proud to be in a town that has a really cool art scene with a bit of "anything goes" attitude.'

Sunday With Hans: Negative Effects

-Sundays With Hans-
-The Phallus In A Negative Light-

The Reverse of positive is obviously negative and a negative image is one in which light areas look dark and dark appears light. Colors also appear reversed, with red appearing cyan, greens appearing magenta and blues appearing yellow. Most interesting to me is the appearance of the face within a negative image, with darker areas such as nostrils and eyebrows standing out.

Negative images often appear to bring out a quality, an emotion, hidden when viewed positively. It is almost as if the negative aspect brings out a truth, a hidden layer which we cannot hide in the negative light.

Thanks to Hans Fahrmeyer for sending on his latest work. Negative Effects is the 54th edition of Sundays With Hans, please check them all out HERE: Also check out more about Hans and more of his work at his official site HERE:
