Once or twice a year the time becomes right to take a little bit of a blog break. The next couple of weeks are looking fairly busy for me with a couple of events (one I am still thinking of ditching....) a few day trips and one weekend away. Feels like a pretty good time to take my leave for a short while.

The blog again grew quite dramatically in viewership since the summer so if you're new, please take the time to check out the artists (list below) who have taken the time to share with myself and readers of the site. I know it is more than a bit pretentious, but with the so many wonderful artists, stories and images showcased on FH over the last 12 months I have done a bit of a sum up. The best part of doing FH is sharing the work, the worst...seeing the incredible images and all the hard work go onto the second page each time I update.

I know that January's end is a bit late for a Year In Review, but as I head out on my blog break I wanted to look back on some of highlights of 2011 on FH. Although many were pic of the days and birthdays, 2011 brought a total of 1165 individual posts. It would be impossible to list all of my favorites so this look back will focus, not so much on individual features, but a general overview of some of the themes and highlights.

Favorites:
Just like when people say; 'It was a thrill just to be nominated', I am sure some will groan when I say, all my subjects are truly favorites. It is however, annoyingly true. Although I frequently wish I had not put the word Hunks in the title of this blog, I have never regretted using the word Favorite. I have a fairly demanding and highly stressful job, own my own home and have a fairly busy (though annoyingly inconsistent) social life. I don't have the time or the energy to invest in putting together a story or feature on anything I don't really love. I don't get paid a cent for FH, so I have to be passionate about what I choose to post about. Sometimes, depending on the amount of a research and writing involved, posts can take hours and even days to bring together. The hope is if I love it, some who stop by will love it as well.

When I first began FH I knew I wanted it to be patterned after a magazine. A great cover (pic of the day), familiar beginning (birthdays) and structured regular features (Blast From the Past, Import of the Day, favorite Links). Although all of these features remain, the main focus has become first and foremost a photographer's showcase. I cannot thank enough each and every photographer who has contributed to the site. It continues to remain exciting to discover new work that not only inspires but moves me in some way. Equally as exciting to me is to read and share the stories the artists send along with their shots.

It is fairly common for photographers to tell me about bad experiences they have had with blogs and sites in the past. There is not an artist out there that has not had their work slapped across some one's site with no credit and no respect for the work, passion, money and detail that went into the image. It is my goal to ensure these are all taken into account with each image that I upload onto FH.

Man Of The Moment: Seth Kuhlmann

Models:
Whenever I profile a photographer it is always a joy to have the model involved in the creative process of putting together the story. In some cases I use a selection of work from different artists to profile a specific model. Models, especially male models don't always get a lot of respect, even from within the industry. They struggle for work, often under paid when they find it, and are looked at by both many in the industry and many who view their work as just a body to be enjoyed. No matter how great they look, no matter how hard they work on their body and appearance, when they have their images posted on sites or blogs there is usually some a-hole making negative comments about their face, hair or body or penis size. It takes courage to expose, even just your face, let alone your body for public scrutinization.

Over the past 12 months there are hundreds of models who have given their support to me to share their images and their stories. Well known models such as Seth Kuhlmann, Max Emerson, Benjamin Godfre as well as models just beginning to make it in the business such as Rob Connell and Quinn Danger.

Although I try to make FH as family friendly (given the theme) as I can, I really thank the models who have put their trust in FH for their first taste of blog exposure. When I was a kid, Playgirl Magazine played a large role in my sexual awakening. From the early stages of the blog I have incorporated classic Playgirl pictorials. Last year, former Playgirl model Gene Carter shot me a quick e-mail thanking me for featuring his shots. This began one of my favorite features, talking in depth looks at some former Playgirl models. Thus far I have only done a couple, Dirk Shafer followed Gene along with an interview with Playgirl's most famous photographer Greg Weiner. Given the level of research they require they take a bit of time to pull together, but several more are in the works for 2012.

Theme Days:
I have always done the odd theme day but last year I loved my homage to Hawaii and followed that up in December showcasing musician Russell Patrick Brown and his modeling work with three different photographers. Each artist (Gordon Nebeker, MStyes and Richard Rothstein) provided such beautifully , different images along with similarly beautiful stories of their work with Russell.

It was one year ago when I first profiled the work of Marlen Boro with his shots of Dominic (below). Marlen's images quickly became the focal point of a regular weekly feature, Thursday's Gentlemen Of Marlen Boro. Throughout 2011 Marlen introduced us all to Quinn & Joey & Darius & Tyrel & Ocho & Tek & Moretti & Sean & Jesse and dozens of other incredible men who have stepped before in front of his incredible lens and magical window.

Marlen's images are always a hit and many of his features (including Sean below) have created tidal waves of furious right click and saving, bursting across other blogs and sites net. It is impossible to pick a favorite feature of Marlen's to highlight but one model who made an impact on me was Kyle who I featured last February. Marlen will tell you I was a bit of nag about getting more shots of Kyle back on the blog. There was something about Marlen's work with Kyle I just loved. Might have been the tease factor (which drives me crazy), or the red lace undies Kyle sported in some of the shots, but Kyle certainly made an impact. I cannot thank Marlen enough for, in the middle of his crazy weekend, editing 35 (who can narrow?) of my favorite Kyle shots to go with today's Year in Review!

'I like shooting in spaces as they are. No lights. No props. No set dressing. I like to let the space speak for itself. And that's what the space does in these photos shot with an up and coming dancer last fall. He’s not a model, but the poses were his own. He moved naturally through the space, finding himself in it, and positioning himself with grace within its walls. I love the quiet and subdued nature of these shots, and how the room becomes just as much of a character in the small stories they tell.'

Kudos to Amy Farrah Fowler

Like many of you i bet, I re-watched Mayim Bialik's 'Glory Of Love' number more than a few times on the old VHS copy of Beaches we rented back in the early 90's. I truly hated the movie but that few minutes of the movie unveiled a true talent. For some reason though I had little to no interest in following Bialik in any of the projects that came after. Not sure why, but even Joey Lawrence could not get me to watch the annoying half hour that was Blossom.

I did however maintain my respect for Bialik. When I would see her on talk shows, I loved her attitude and intelligence. Sometimes it takes just the right character to allow an actor to truly shine. Big Bang Theory does just that with Amy Farrah Fowler. I have loved Bialik's Amy since her first episode but the last two seasons she has been providing some of the shows biggest laughs.

The scene a couple of weeks ago when Sheldon presented Amy with a tiara was one of the most hilarious scenes I have seen on a sit-com (especially an American one) in awhile. The brilliance came stemmed yes from the writing but mostly from how Bialik nails Amy with every word and line put in front of her. Amy reminds me a bit of a Muppet. Even without dialogue, Bialik uses her characters limited range of emotions, to create, like a Muppet, hilarious over the top facial expressions.

I haven't really given Nick Jonas much love on FH. In fact, usually when I mention the Jonas Brothers it is with a note of sarcasm. Never really been a fan of the brothers or their music but lately....whoa!!!

Recently watching Nick doing press for his turn in Broadway's How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying has had me paying much closer attention. Maybe it is because Nick is a little older but he is looking, and sounding, mighty fine and getting decent reviews for his performance to boot.

For most, rust has a negative connotation, it is the color of corrosion, the chemical reaction which occurs when iron meets oxygen and water which results in a vibrant red-orange color.

For me, this chemical reaction is equally as powerful when in the hands of a skilled photographer shooting an auburn haired model. Color, tone and feel are are essential elements of almost all images yet for some reason the industry seems to shy away from embracing the auburn. I love profiling models with auburn or red hair. Partly preference, but mainly because I feel there is an essence expressed that is unique from what you get from other models. I think there are more images of the models I have featured with auburn or red hair linked to, and shared more than any other.

The aforementioned essence is acutely present in this series of Seth from South Carolina photographer Jeff Rice. Jeff has always had a passion for photography and in 2008decided to start his own photography business, Carolina Freelance. Jeff strives to create an equality of ownership within his work, looking for the models he shoots to bring their own creativity to the shoot.

Jeff describes working with 19 year old Seth Oliver as an absolute pleasure. Seth has always had a passion for fashion and design and is currently studying attending college studying architecture. I love how Seth looks within and around the waterfall. The natural sunlight glistens so beautifully off the streaming water, Seth's skin and auburn hair.

'Seth is a gorgeous and gifted model. We met on a hot Summer day to do a shirtless and commando jeans shoot in the water.I was impressed by his natural good looks and self confidence. Seth was new to the modeling world and had never done any sexy shots at the time. We started out with some pretty shots in shorts and flip flops to to warm up a bit.He changed into his low rider jeans and we headed for the water and Seth Oliver came to life! It became very obvious to me that he knows how to be sexy. I just simply told him to seduce the camera and he went to work. He needed very little direction and used his body, eyes and facial expressions to create some amazing poses.'

Kudos to Michael Fassbender

Sadly, the talented Michael Fassbender did not score a deserved Oscar nomination yesterday. Fassbender is getting a ton of attention of getting naked in Shame, and although I love me some naked, I hope it does overshadow his brilliant performance.

I am going to resist sharing the caps (and they are out there already), as they are not great quality and would rather wait for a better print to cap. In the meantime however, FH contributor, not to mention one of it's popular subject, David Asset recently posted this commercial Michael did for SAS Airlines earlier in his career.

As most of the county continues to wade it's way through snow, rain and all that winter brings with it, I thought it might be appropriate to take, even if virtually, a return to summer and the beach. Like many, I live in a place where hanging at the beach is restricted to only a couple of months of the year, swimming in the ocean to even less. Thankfully Deej from DLJ Photography hails from Lawndale California where there are many more months not just to enjoy the beach but to utilize it as a magnificently, rent free studio.

I have always felt a pull to the ocean, especially during storms when the wind and waves join forces to create a natural museum of visual masterpieces. The beach has always been a favorite backdrop for many photographers of the male form but it was not until spending time with Deej's work and hearing how he puts his love of the location into words, that I fully understood the magic of the location.

When shooting in studio, even when working on location, your backdrop and surroundings basically remain static as you shoot. Yes, wind and rain may effect an outside set but basically if you choose to shoot a model in front of barn, behind the model remains a barn. There are a couple of locations however, that even if the model remains perfectly still, have a fluidity that create incredible differences in each shot that is taken.

Deej's passion for photography began as a teen but it was not until 2001 that he began working more professionally. With the exception of a few photography workshops and a ton of reading, Deej says most of his experience comes from a gut feeling of what he thinks looks good. Much of this gut feeling Deej attributes to the inspiration he takes from photographers he admires. Deej studies the work of others and creatively uses concepts he loves, putting a new spin on it, making it his own. Although I like to think most of the shots I love come from the actual taking of the shot, Deej believes some of his best shots are not made by the actual taking of the picture but through the editing process. Whatever the process, when I saw my first image from Deej, the naked surfer at the top of the feature, I knew I wanted to jump on board!

Reveal: Ilan Ben-Yehuda by Richard Rothstein

I am not usually a fan of self-congratulation. I don't like it in others, I don't like it in myself. I do understand however, that except in cases of those suffering from actual narcissism, it usually stems from a need to be acknowledged. Many, have a need to be seen, those who run websites and blogs are looking to be heard. With FH, this need was not apparent to me when I first began the blog. My initial intent was to use the blog as sort of a storage space for images that inspired and moved me in some way. If there are any of you who came upon FH in it's early days it was mostly a picture posting blog, light on words, heavy on shots of the penis.

Now in it's fifth year, FH has grown slowly and surely into a place I am really happy with. My page views are higher than ever, reaching numbers I never would have imagined. Artists I respect willingly share their work with myself and the site, and most importantly story is front and center. Posting pictures is no longer enough for me. Yes, some photos don't require a lot of text, most can, really should, stand on their own. But...that is not enough for me. If it were I would simply start a tumblr page and right click, save and upload until carpal tunnel set in. I am a writer, and mixing of image with text is what I have come to believe is why many enjoy stopping by here on a regular basis.

I am not trying...well, maybe just a little, to criticize blogs and sites that simply share the work of others. For me however, that would not quench my thirst to express myself creatively. It also, would not quench my need to be heard.

My best posts are when I find a connection to the work, especially when that connection stems from my childhood or youth. It is a personal belief of mine, one I have written about several times before on the blog, that most of what we do above the age of 25 is somehow horribly and beautifully connected to something we did or experienced before the age of 25. Sometimes it is the safety and security of a loving family that guides us through adulthood. Sometimes it is pain and trauma that casts a dark shadow over the decades that follow.

I can count on one hand the amount of features on FH that have been directly about my life. Usually I sprinkle in something here and there revealing bits and pieces that those who read on a regular basis can easily put together.

Last week, one of my favorite days of posting on FH was my circus themed day. I was really pleased with the results of the theme (insert self-congratulations here) and loved each of the features and each of the images. Mostly though, I loved how the photos and stories so connected to both memories and fantasies I experienced as a kid.

I am not sure there is any greater nexus, both connecting and also separating adulthood and childhood than clowns. There are just certain things; clowns, balloons, shiny red bicycles, yoyo's and fireworks that force you, whether you want to or not, to regress to a younger you. I wrote in my first post featuring Richard Rothstein' clown images that when I was first started putting it together, my coulrophobia resurfaced as strongly as it did when I was 12. Then...as it usually does when you face a fear, in spending time with Richard's images, the negative feelings subsided and before I knew it I was asking to see more and looking forward to featuring more of the shots on the blog.

I think the key to switching how you feel about something is to view it in a new or different light. Richards's shots brought about my first positive experiences with a clown. I think the main reason is because Richard did not shoot a clown, Richard shot a man. Richard shoots all of his subjects with such a sense of play that the nexus I described, the adult weaved with the freedom and lightness of being a child, is so vividly present in so much of his work. Finding your inner child is not always easy, but as difficult as it may be, it is usually ultimately rewarding. Richard bridges these two worlds so beautifully within his work and is one of the main reasons I am so drawn to it.

The man I have consistently referred to as 'the clown' does actually have a name. Ilan Ben-Yehuda brings such whimsy, warmth and play within his work and he is miles away from the clowns my brain had embedded from the days I was 12. There is also a sense of safety expressed, even behind the nose and the make-up, Ilan gently engages. Ilan's magic stems from not pushing for laughs but instead simply seeking something most of us crave to share, a smile.

Ilan Ben-Yehuda studied at the Lowis Cowles Harrison Centre for the Performing Arts in central Florida, and later at Florida State University. Realizing the tenuous nature of a career in the arts, he went to Core Institute of Massage Therapy for a vocation. After working in Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Tallahassee, he attended the Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre, where he first played in clown. His musical education began at an age too early to remember, or so his mother tells him. He has created theatre and played music in San Francisco; Los Angeles; Baltimore; Tallahassee; Central Florida; Northern California; Edinburgh, Scotland; Berlin, Germany; Falerum, Sweden; and Copenhagen, Denmark. He has also worked in small, independent film and video production. His training and work as an educator has covered a range of subjects, including, but not limited to, Basic Judaism, Holocaust, Theatre, Mask, Massage, and Creative Writing.

'Ilan doesn't pose for the camera. He plays a role and tells a story along the way which makes for a very creative and always interesting shoot. And even when his clown nature is expressed by nothing but a red nose, people smile and interact in ways that bring out the story and character even more. We've been out doing nudes (but with the red nose) late at night and on the streets and have been approached or passed by different kinds of people and they always smile. It's a gift he has in body language.'

Kudos to Helen Mirren & Glee

As someone one with a close family member with Downs I thought Helen Mirren killed it last weeks Glee. I was a bit hesitant to watch Yes/No as I only watched last night and already read quite a few reviews both pro and con. Many of the cons were critical of 'using' Becky' and sharply criticized much of her dialog. For me, the writing was spot on.

I have been quite critical of the ups and downs of the Fox show but the writing this week by Brad Falchuk was spot on and laugh out loud hilarious. I think people not familiar with being around someone with Downs assumes they are all like the 'Life Goes On' portrayal. The few I know are as capable of every emotion as we are, they can be sexual, kind and mean and many have a keen sense of sarcasm. Given what they have to cope with, they is often desperately needed to handle the crap dumped on them daily. Becky, and Mirren presented it beautifully.

Nene Leakes was good in her one scene. (although Overstreet's nipples looked pretty balanced to me) It was also nice that the closing musical number gave a bit more meaning to Sam's joining of the synchronized swimming team than just an excuse to see those aforementioned nipples.

Lewis And Marshall says he is new to shooting and is primarily focusing his attention on learning and improving his photography skills. Import Of The Day: Vinzenz Kiefer

German actor Vinzenz Kiefer dreamed of being a action hero on the silver screen since he was a boy watching his parents VHS collection. Batman and Zorro were two of his favorites. Vinzenz's dream was touched by fate when as a kid he was taking a studio tour in Cologne. Vinzenz was attracting the attention of many of the teenage girls on the tour, most who assumed he was a star and wanted his autograph. The attention he was receiving did not go unnoticed by some people in production and before too long he was being offered roles in television. Although he initially resisted, upon completion of school, he relented and began his first professional roles on television.

As began working in the business, Vinzenz continued to study, this time with a focus on acting. He studied with some of the best acting teachers in Germany and came to the US to spend time at the Strasberg Institute in New York in 2002. Although mostly known for his roles in German television and film, the young actor did appear in a small role along side Emile Hirsch in 2008's Speed Racer when the film was shooting in Germany.

I am not sure I have laughed quite so hard at the suicidal tendencies of French Bulldog as I did while watching last weeks Modern Family. Watching Jay and Gloria try to ensure Stella did not end it all in the families swimming pool was priceless. Stella, as played by Brigitte, has the best facial expressions of anyone in the immensely talented cast.

When I first contacted Frank Aron Gårdsø of Studio Troll i Ord, it was about one shot of one model. Although the Oslo photographer says he is not a professional, his portfolio is a visually eclectic mix of subjects, themes and textures. Along with many incredible shots of male models were sets with titles such as Oslo Trash, Dolls, Masks, Got Milk and Butts. Now...if you check out FH on any type of regular basis you may have assumed I would have gone straight to Butts, but this time I went straight to Black. (the butts...hopefully a follow-up...)

Usually I can pinpoint why an image speaks to me but with black, I have still not exactly figured it out. Visually there is just something incredibly intriguing to me about the images. It might be the luminescent look of the models skin contrasted with the black, it might be the similarity of the material to a garbage bag. The way in which Frank chose to shoot, with pose and angles, it almost looks as if the model is lost, trapped at the bottom of a bag. Although this may not have been Frank's intent, it gives the images a feel of urgency I liked. Whatever the reason, visually the images were something I had not seen before, that in itself is something that always warrants attention.

I found this very nice and shiny PVC coated fabric in my favorite fabric store, and I just had to buy it. Sometimes I don’t even have an idea of what to shoot. I just buy stuff that I find interesting and stash it at home until later. Sometimes I don't get any ideas and just play with it. This time I started out by taking pictures of a friend of mine and I just put the black PVC coated fabric on my bed adjusted him on top of it and started to shoot. I liked the result and wanted to try this out on other models.

'I wanted to have the human body turned and twisted in different shape on top of that black fabric. I wanted the shine and feel of something metallic, in contrast with the pale skin of the models. As for the shooting itself, I just used a chair to stand on while I positioned the model on the fabric directly on my living room floor. Used one flash. Aimed the camera directly down on the model. I did not even see in my viewfinder what I shot. I took a chance that it will turn out well. I set the focus manually and moved my arms as far out as I could and took the shot. Simple as that, and many hours of work in Photoshop to get the desired look and feel that I wanted at that time.'

Frank's day job is also one with a focus on the visual. Frank has worked in various aspects of the film industry, cinematographer, actor, writer and director and numerous other jobs related to the industry including working as part of the crew for Norway's Next Top Model. Frank says often it is something very simple that becomes his inspiration.

'Sometimes I write a little story that goes with it, sometimes I just like to test my skills in Photoshop and then a whole new concept pops up.'

Parker Shell by Millar Photographics

I have had my eye on the work of Neil Millar from Millar Photographics for awhile now. Neil's work with model Jerome Davis caught my eye last year and I made a note to get in contact with the artist. When I revisited Neil's portfolio in December his recent work with 21 year model Parker Shell literally jumped off the screen at me.

Parker has to have one of the worlds most infectious grins. His smile lit up each shot and Neil wisely made Parker's smile the focus of many of his images. Although his smile is what initially attracted me to his images, his appeal does not stop there. Parker also has incredible blue eyes and a extremely fit body and looks like he is having a lot fun in front of the camera.

Hailing from Salmon Arm British Columbia, Neil has always been visually surrounded by extraordinary sites. Tourists flock to the city each summer to spend time by engulfed by the area's mountains, lakes and of course, the Salmon River. If you check out Neil's site you will see his passion for photography was often channeled through capturing the scenic sites around him.

Neil has always dreamt of taking his photography to a different and more professional level. Over the past couple of years, Neil's lens has focused less on landscapes and more on people and loves the expressiveness, energy and creativity of working with models.

Expressive is without a doubt the perfect adjective to describe Neil's work with Parker. Neil says working with Parker was extraordinary and that his smile could melt glaciers. I wholehearted agree and can think of no greater compliment.

Up until the age of 12 I frequently dreamt of running away and joining the circus. My dream was built on the magic of the lights, the music, my love of animals, my love of performing and my desperate desire to escape.

By the time I was old enough to actually take the journey, reality had set in. Not only was the traditional circus pretty much dead by the time I was a teenager, my knowledge and awareness of the treatment of the animals would not have allowed me to to work somewhere that had bears riding bikes and elephants forced to dance. My homelife had also stabilized to the point escape, although still a plan, was not one I needed to act on with the same degree of urgency.

I wonder where kids today dream of running off to. Sure, we have Cirque du Soleil but the mystic of the tradional circus wasn't just about what happened within the three rings, but what happened beyond them. Although I know the reviews were not kind, the recent film Water For Elephants brought to life for me what it was I was dreaming of. There was a sense of not only excitment and adventure but of family and inclusion. A ragtag group of people, forming a family, traveling the country with a rough and dirty yet magical mystique that pulled at the dreams of all kids like me, seeking a place to belong.

One of the most exciting parts of any circus is without a doubt the aerial performances. Not only does it require a high level of technical skill, there is an artistry and magic in watching bodies move so gracefully in the air high above you.

When I think of bodies moving gracefully I cannot think of anyone who captures them as well as Mark Grantham. In my feature (Beauty of Lines) I put it this way;

'I was immediately drawn to his work as he is a master at capturing moments of movement. When I think of Mark Grantham I think of space. Mark's work is not just about the body in motion it is equally about the space in which that motion occurs.'

The idea for a circus theme has been with me for awhile but I could not go forward without including Mark's images of performing aerialist Apollo Bird. Apollo performs with the Vespertine Circus, a troupe of 7 multi-talented main characters, who have performed both internationally & across the USA. Mark's work with Apollo captures so beautifully what it is at the core that draws me to Mark's work and makes it such an addictive pleasure to spend time with.

When I was 12 years old I was given the responsibility, for the first time, of taking my brother without an adult to the circus. It was a traveling circus, one of those that set up in mall parking lots for a few days. At 12, I loved the circus. The animals, the acrobats, the colors and mystery. Elephants, lions and mobile homes turned dotted parking spaces into a magical world I would stare at for hours after school.

Soooo, my mother dropped my brother off and I off in front of the main tent, gave me strict instructions to watch my brother closely, and headed off into the mall to kill the hour or two until the show would be done. We had no money for food or souvenirs (I would have killed for one of those photo filled programs). Instead, we each had prepacked granola bars and grapes. Those grapes stick strongly in my memory as I felt the stares from all those around as with their cotton candy as we opened our zip lock sandwich bags stuffed with grapes.

At intermission, my brother wanted to go to the bathroom. I should have smelled trouble looming right there and then. I ran along with him to the blue outhouses that lined the outside of the tent. As I waited for my brother to finish I kept my eyes firmly, not on his whereabouts, but on the camels and horses grazing oh so naturally on straw thrown on the pavement.

Well as the whistle blew for the show to continue, I had the realization I had left any thoughts of my brother for about the past 10 minutes and committed firmly to dreaming about what it would be like to join the circus. Panic set in quickly and strongly. I began calling is name, running between the outhouse line and the opening of the tent. After what seemed liked hours, but was really more like seconds, I decided I needed help. The piped in music was beginning and spotlight was starting to circle the inside of the main tent. I thought the best person, and safest, to seek assistance from would be the clown that was about to start act two of the show. I wasn't really paying attention so did not internalize he was about to go 'on'. Frightened and nervous, I walked towards him and weakly asked if he would announce that my brother was missing.

The next 5 seconds are permanently ingrained in my memory, and nightmares forever. The clown stared down at me, his painted on smile turned into twisted annoyance and in a voice I can only remember as evil the clown quietly but intensely said 'Get the Fuck back in your seat.' As he turned to face the audience I stood in shock for a few seconds before I slowly walked back to my seat.

As I slunk back into my seat, the fact my brother was already sitting there waiting for me was of little consolation. A childhood fantasy had just been violently murdered. I was in shock for the rest of the day and days to follow. I can only compare it to finding out about Santa Clause. Yet another chunk of the magic that makes up being a kid was shot to hell. Life was forever just a little bit different and a little less special.

From this point on I have had issues with clowns. My coulrophobia crops up whenever I see a clown, in person, on tv or movies. Each time, the memory floods back. I of course have made the mistake of sharing this with may of my friends. It has led to clown related joke gifts at every holiday. Pop-up clown toys in my desk, clown related phone messages on my phone and 3 different gift DVD sets of IT. (which btw I LOVE).

When Richard Rothstein mentioned his clown shoot earlier this month, I again made the mistake of letting him know of my issues with clowns. Well Richard, like those clever friends of mine, decided to have some fun and began embedding shots of the clown he shot, Bounce, in the body of emails and sent them to me over the following couple of days. Of course he did not put any warning in the title so as I opened each e-mail I got to relive my childhood horror again and again.

Now...I sort of hate to admit it but I have to thank Richard for his clown intervention. I would not go so far as to say that my coulrophobia is cured, but spending time with his images of Bounce have made it a little more tolerable. Bounce's intent is not to frighten but instead to bring smiles and pleasure to those he encounters, mostly as roams throughout New York City. There is a fascinating and erotic juxtaposition with a naked clown. The whole intent of 'clown' is usually to mask, hide and cover, something you might think being naked would make difficult. Bounce, within Richard's images, manages to maintain the mystery, even when wearing nothing but a balloon bouquet.

'I've always been fascinated by the intimate juxtaposition of the ridiculous and the sublime; and by that occasional moment during the heat of sex when you find yourself observing as well as participating and suddenly realize that absent the hormonal surge, the moment is truly ridiculous. The position you're in is truly silly and what you and your sex partner(s) are doing looks absurd. And you laugh; its when ridiculous meets sexual frenzy in one great big orgasm of silly. Hence, the naked erotic clown. We've all been there, whether you want to admit it or not. It's when an erect penis suddenly morphs into a rubber chicken.'

Dreams, maybe.... more specifically fantasy, is the soul which powers much of the work of Toronto based artist flondo. Self described as a photoshop artist and photographer, flondo has a theatre, film and photography background which can be seen beautifully invading much of his imagery. Although flondo's portfolio includes many erotic images of intriguing and sexy men, I was drawn initially to his Manimals, Mermen, Angels, Faeries & Elves. I have to admit that I already was thinking of my Circus theme as I floated through flonto's flickr sets, so... when I saw his set titled Circus, Circus I knew where I wanted to begin.

I think the difference between dream and a fantasy is time, and more importantly choice and control. You dream almost without intent or planning. During the day when bored or stressed, your mind takes over, breaking the tension with thoughts to help you through the moment. During the night, when sleeping, your subconscious takes control, pulling together elements of reality, inner fears and fantasy into visualizations that can bring both ecstasy, and at other times intense horror or dread. No matter how much we may want to plan or control our dreams, they force us to take a back seat and the control remains, no matter how much we fight it, not our own.

Fantasy on the other hand is all ours! We plan our fantasy's. As we slide under the sheets, as we lay on the grass staring at the sky, we get to plan who we will think about and what we will be doing with them. When we have a successful one, it gets repeated, sometimes for days and days, some we pull from year to year. These fantasy's arouse us, pleasure us but most of all comfort us.

The comfort comes from the fact that since we're writing the ending, we can predict it. Elements of reality, senses of noise and smell rarely enter in. They hit our emotional and visual senses while leaving the others untouched. The clowns and men in flono's Circus, Circus world are not scary or loud, have no rips in, or stains on, their costumes. The bodies are perfect, the fabric rich,the color vibrant and men, sexual and exotic.

Just Because: What about Talent?

People get old... Should they be shot for it?

Last night when I got home about an hour into The Golden Globes, but with the magic of the DVR was able to pretty much be on track live after about 30 minutes. I decided to log on to facebook to catch up on some of the commentary. Sometimes the comments are much wittier and funnier than the show itself. Now last nights show was not horrible, but with some of the most talented people in the world in the room, why was the banter not more interesting???

After about 10 minutes on Facebook I got pretty disgusted and quickly closed the window. First off acting award shows are supposed to be about acting. Now...the Golden Globes of course are about so much more but... The current emphasis on fashion and looks makes any talent anyone in the room have pretty much secondary to if they put on a pound or two and especially if they happened to do the unthinkable, age.

When Jane Fonda walked on stage people were a buzz about how great she looked, and hell she did! I like Jane Fonda, don't love her, but like her. Never found her acting as powerful as the other ladies in the top pic above. But really...did she look good for 75 or did she look just a bit odd. I guess it depends on your priorities. I read so many comments on how Jessica Lange should take a page from Fonda and how haggard Lange looked. Really??? For 63, she looks pretty fine to me. Now I guess Lange could have gotten a better stylist or spend a decade preaching to women about getting fit the natural way, then turn around and get everything nipped, tucked and sucked as Jane did, but I for one am pretty happy she did not.

In the past year Lange gave me chills and huge laughs with incredible turn as Constance on American Horror Story. (which btw she won for last night) Fonda, well she did the talk show circuit hawking her latest book. My goal is not to bash Jane, but I find it sad that her look, one put together with surgery, latex, make-up and tons of cash, is revered while someone like Lange who chose to age more naturally is bashed to shit. This world doesn't stand a chance!

Congratulations to the winners last night, although not all my picks won, all the winners were well deserved!

Principles: Steve R by Chris Teel

With FH now in it's 5th year it has become one of my goals to not only introduce readers of the blog to new and exciting artists, but to continue to showcase the work of artists who have shared their work, and their stories, with FH over the last five years. Toronto's Chris Teel has been sharing his time and his images for four out of those five years.

Although the search at the top of the blog is pretty much useless, when I as the blog owner search in my dashboard, 67 posts come up when I search for Chris on FH. In addition some of my features on his work, including his shots of Samuel Boux, are some of the sites most popular. Two of the most popular posts of all time included Chris' work with Matt Eldracher at the conclusion of the Model Search Chris and I conducted last winter. (Encore: & Culmination:)

I was really excited to see the results when I found out Chris shot Steve R last year. Steve is another favorite of mine and has been featured numerous times in the past couple of years as well. (Fight And Flight) Steve is one of the most interesting and talented guys to feature and his modeling is just a minuscule part of the various ways his passion and artistry are released. Although Steve lives in Greece, he also has Canadian connections and met up to shoot with Chris when in Toronto last year.

Chris beautifully blended his shooting style with the passion for martial arts, physical strength and movement, Steve assimilates into all he does. Steve has studied taekwondo for over 14 years, kickboxing for 3 years, and free style fight for 2. Some of the main principles of taekwondo are to teaches it's students self confidence, self respect, physical and mental discipline. Steve uses these within his own life to help strengthen discipline and confidence.

'I'm always on the lookout for models with dance, gymnastics, acrobatic, yoga and martial arts backgrounds as they're capable of creating the most interesting poses. Though I'd seen some of Steve's other work, I'm glad that although we were shooting martial arts, that the final images were dissimilar to anything else that he'd done and still reflected my style of shooting.'

Just Because: Heather Locklear

Except for a childhood crush on John James chest I never really watched much Dynasty but I have always loved me a little Heather Locklear. Locklear dominated television screens for pretty much the last three decades on Dynasty, TJ Hooker, Melrose Place and Spin City. Funny I feel like I have watched Locklear ever since I can remember watching TV but none of these shows actually appealed to me, speaks I guess to her actual appeal. Sadly, Locklear has appeared to have lost a bit of her mojo. Stuck in mostly Lifetime moves the last little while, a recent broken engagement and last weekends emergency room scare Locklear appears to be having a late in life Lohan. Here's hoping Locklear can pull it together, lay off the botox and slide on her stilettos again soon! No one sashays across a room, or a television screen. better!

Kudos to Daniel Radcliffe

I am not sure the writing of this weeks SNL was really that much better than last weeks but...Daniel Radcliffe proves when you have a host with some talent it makes all the difference in the world.

It is a little surprising given it's years on the air, Lorne Michaels and SNL have seemingly not learned from past mistakes. Last weeks Charles Barkley episode was painfully bad. Between the writing and Barkley's tortured cue card reading, it was like watching a bad grade school dress rehearsal. (thank goodness for DVR's and the >> button) It is not that having an athlete or politician as host is so bad. But...what SNL continues to fail at is choosing to write for them instead of the better choice of writing around them. It was obvious they tried to bring out something in Barkley (and he is not without appeal). Instead, when there is a week with a Barkley, there should be Stefon, Wiig's best and brightest, and the characters the audience loves to see.

What Radcliffe was able to do so well (besides showing his beautiful chest), was to use his considerable acting and stage skills to showcase his personality, even when the sketches could not. I think most of last nights concepts were winning, but sadly they all went on a few minutes too long. We shall we what Channing Tatum does (hopefully he will rip off his shirt as well) when he takes on the host role in February.

It was back in 2009 when profiling model and dancer Mark MacKillop that I first discovered the imagery of Atlanta's photographer Carl Proctor. Carl has been both generous and supportive, sharing his work and stories on a regular basis with myself and the readers of FH.

It is always a pleasure to assemble a post featuring Carl's work and his work with model Chad Glenn was no exception. I think two of the factors that make featuring Carl's images so stimulating and interesting is the variety of selections within his model portfolios. Carl skillfully blends the erotic with the artistic and ensures the models he shoots end up with a selection of shots from classic, dramatic portraits through fashion, fetish and incredible nudes.

In the case of personal trainer and image consultant Chad Glenn, choosing shots was a difficult pleasure. Not only were there literally hundreds of shots to go through, there were dozens of different set ups, looks and moods to choose from. I tried to pick a variety of my favorites to showcase the variety of incredible images Carl creates within his shoots.

Working as a personal trainer keeps Miami Beach's Chad Glenn 'shoot ready' at all times. Chad's 'shoot ready' body has appeared among other place, in Exercise For Men, Playgirl and his work with Dylan Rosser was featured in Dylan's RED.

But it’s even more rewarding if the results are special and it turns out that the model is a terrific person as well. Even those of us who really should know better, we often still continue to assume any model, especially models who chose to do nude work, have a healthy dose of self esteem about their body and their looks. As I have learned interviewing both models and photographers over the years, this is frequently not always the case. Sometimes the camera can highlight, acting as a bit of truth serum, a strength or even a perceived flaw. Sometimes through the lens of a skilled photographer the perceived flaw can even become an asset. A great image, and great response to it can transform how one not only looks at the flaw, but themselves as a whole.

'It has been a bit of a struggle to deal with the fact that I have hair everywhere and that it is dark and thick. I always thought that my hair was too much and that I needed to get rid of it all. I was rather ashamed to show it off since it seemed that an attractive gay man shouldn’t have hair. Through countless reassurances from friends and lovers I’ve come to realize that my hair is rather beautiful. I came to accept that I have a great natural look that people actually like. It is a bit of a rare look still these days but I hope to become a bit of a role model to those who are hiding their hair and let them know that it can actually be attractive.'

It should be difficult to understand why a man as incredibly sexy as Vincent would have body issues, but sadly it is not really that complicated. Even the most beautiful models are often edited, airbrushed and photoshopped to death. It boggles my mind when I see a nude shot of a model with a beautiful body and penis morphed by another photographer into something more suited to a science fiction porn movie than reality. Sure, airbrush out that pimple, but the stupidity of some photographers to follow the same path that caused so many self esteem issues in women is beyond moronic.

When spending some time with images of 24 year old Vincent you cannot help but quickly becoming infatuated. Great face, piercing brown eyes, that sexy smile and killer body highlighted by his amazing chest. Tom Rubeck from TR Pics captures every inch of Vincent beautifully with his energetic and creative eye. I say energetic with intent as I always love going back to Tom's portfolio as I always find new images to love and even images I am already familiar with, I often see in a new light.

'Back in the late Spring of 2011 I was supposed to take a trip to the Tennessee area for work, and so as I sometimes do, I did a search on Model Mayhem to see if there were any models in the area that might be up for a shoot. This is how I found Vincent Wolfang. At that time, he only had a few images on his page, but had a look that I definitely wanted to explore with my camera. So I contacted him, and we chatted for a bit, but it just didn't work out. There was no way the two of us could meet up in the short time I would be there.'

'Jump now to August of 2011 and I get an email from Vincent saying he's going to be visiting a friend where I live in Dallas, and was wondering if I was still wanting to shoot with him. I send him an eager yes, we we set up the time and date. Well, we hit it right off the bat. My experience shooting with him rivaled the greatest ones I have ever had. Instantly, he seemed like my new muse. He was willing, eager, looked great... and our little hour-long shoot soon went close to four hours. We shot all over the studio, and I loved just about every click that came out of my camera.'

'But wait, there's more....! I have a good friend who had always been wanting to shoot a Male-with-Male scene. I had wanted to try something here, as well, and so I called up John and told him about Vincent. I rang up Vincent, and told him about John. The two met, we three got together, and an afternoon at my house turned into another great marathon photo session. Love what we got there, especially by the pool.'

'What I love about Vincent is that he is totally earnest in his work. Yet instantly, this cute boy demeanor transfers into this sexy mo-fo right before the lens. He knows how to give you his best look, and he is not shy about showing any and all. He is still relatively new to modeling, but I would suspect he could go a long way, if he wanted to. I am sure if we lived closer, I would bug the hell out of him to shoot and shoot and shoot.'

Although today's posts are for January 12th, I am sitting here, as I usually do, the night before uploading my posts for the next day.

I felt it important to mark today, the 11th, with a shot by Marlen Boro. It was on January 11th of last year that I posted my first (Dominic, which continues to remain a favorite) story featuring the work of photographer Marlen Boro.

Over the past 12 months, Marlen has become more than a contributor but a friend. The friendship has not been without a bump or two (putting together a model contest will test any relationship....). Marlen likes to push my limits creatively and believe me, although he has opened up much of his image vault for myself, FH and it's viewers, with 50 posts and hundreds of images later I have barely skimmed the surface of all the incredible work Marlen has to offer.

On to 2012!

I was a little worried when I found out Absolutely Fabulous coming back again. I only discovered the series through DVD and was laughing my ass off at Jennifer Saunders and company long after the series went off the air. (back in the day it was the perfect show to watch high)

With a good, but not great, Christmas episode, the New Year's show was back to the high level of hilarity viewers have come to expect from the writing and the cast. Speaking of the cast, they all look amazing espcially given the show went off the air in 2004. Some, like Julia Sawalha, actually look younger! Keep em coming Jennifer!

Downton Abbey's: Dan Stevens

Now I know depending on where you live (or your downloading skills) many of you have long ago seen season 2 of Downton Abbey. Although I could easily download or buy the DVD I decided I wanted to watch the show as I did season 1, during it's broadcast on PBS. It was wonderful to return to the lives of The Grantham's and Crawley's (and all who work with and for them). It was also great to be enveloped again in the shows incredible score.

Dan Steven's Matthew Crawley is certainly a favorite from the series. Steven's began acting with the National Youth Theatre in London and was a member of the Footlights while studying at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Steven's first major role to gain attention was in 2006 in the mini-series 'Line Of Beauty'. He followed this up with various stage, television and film roles, mostly based out of the UK. Steven's is about to get more international attention when he co-stars along side Alicia Silverstone, who reunites with her Clueless director Amy Heckerling, in the soon to be released Vamps.

Like in the first season, in the episode one of the second season Downton Abbey again introduced a character I was instantly drawn to. In the first season, the show quickly had us lusting over Kemal Pamuk, (Theo James) only to quickly kill him. Season two began with the introduction of Lieutenant Edward Courtenay who I, along with Thomas and I am sure, many of you lusted over. Sadly again, the show chose to off him prior to the closing credits.

One of the things I love about Downton Abbey is that story moves quickly and characters go through changes in each episode. That being said, Thomas's infatuation with the blind soldier would have made a wonderful story to have been able to follow for the course of the season. Although Lieutenant Courtenay is gone, my love of actor Lachlan Nieboer has only just begun!

I really do love vibrant, colorful, high concept shoots. You know the ones! Dragon heads, decapitated body parts and sixteen television sets act as props, surrounding models to form dynamic and creative imagery. I often feature shoots such as this on FH, ones that touch or disturb me in some way. Ones whose messages are distinct and powerful.

I equally love when the creativity comes more modestly, even quietly. Images in which light and dark are the only things surrounding a model and the only props needed are small dabs of fashion or a pair of glasses. The creativity stems from the lighting, the pose, facial expression. A small change of angle, a hint of shadow are the things which change what could be just a photo into something a bit more artistic.

'Let's shoot! I'm a young easy going photographer looking to captivate eyes and mind through creativity. My ultimate goal is to create pieces of work that can be categorized as art, photographs that evoke feelings; emotions. (Is that even possible?)'

Based in LA, photographer Erick Herfs has always had a camera close by. It was only recently however, that he entered the fashion world and started shooting models. About a year ago a friend, looking to get a start in the modeling world, asked him to shoot some shots for his portfolio. Then, sort like the old Heather Locklear Faberge ad (here with late actor Chris Mayer) word spread when a friend of the models also liked the images Erick had shot.

Erick went on to then open a ModelMayhem account and before too long models began requesting to work with him. At just 26, Erick is having fun with his photography, he works full time in film and photography is currently a sideline, but he is looking forward to seeing where it takes him.

'Always eager to meet new models, every shoot is a whole different experience and I love to learn from each of these. Can't wait for my next shoot with any model out there who just like me is passionate, focused and dedicated towards the development of fresh ideas; ultimately creating art, but most importantly, having fun while doing so!'

Shanked: New York Soaps

Forgive the obvious pun in the title but this post has gone through a variety of stages. It began several months ago when a FH reader wrote in asking if I would do a feature on actor Bill Shanks. The reader wrote one of his favorite parts of the blog was Blast from the Past, especially the soap stars that he grew up watching were featured. Bill Shanks played Dr. Casey Peretti on the soap from 1986 through 1990. Unfortunately, after quite a bit of research I found very little of Shanks on the net. But this week after reading an interesting NY Post article on New York and the soaps I thought of a good reason to post a bit of Shanks and some other starts from some NYC based soaps.

I did not watch the cancelled As The World Turns nor have I seen a second of One Life To Live which ends it's forty plus year run this Friday. That does not mean however that I don't mourn the death of the daytime soap. (R.I.P ABC Soaps) There is something comforting, even safe about soaps. I have vivid memories of getting home from school as a kid, making a peanut butter sandwich and sitting with my mother as she watched Another World. I remember watching The Young And The Restless with the girl I was dating in Jr High. I still DVR Days Of Our Lives from time to time when there is a storyline of interest (current Chandler Massey is rocking the house with his coming out storyline). Currently daytime is riddled with shows that frankly scare me. I like Dr. Oz, but between his show, The Doctors, Dr. Phil, The Chew and the slew of other shows, when you turn on the tv during the day now the only thing you find out is how wrong everything your doing in your life is! The bedroom scenes from Bay City are looking tame in comparison to the reality based 'stories' on most of the talk shows.

The story in the NY Post was interesting as I have always thought the NY soap world seemed quite special in the genre's hay day. I remember how it was depicted in Tootsie and how it became a running storyline for Joey on Friends (Although Days Of Our Lives is actually filmed in CA). Soaps in NY make sense as many soap actors move back and forth between their shows and the stage. Give me a juicy soap opera over a bunch of loud mouths talking about topics many know little to nothing about.

Congratulations to photographer Shayne Fergusson who got a great Christmas gift by having his work featured in the new Bruno Gmunder book Trunk Show: Swimwear Inspires Art. I first profiled Shayne`s work last October when I featured his work with model Steven Watson (From Sydney with Love). The Sydney based photographer is hoping 2012 brings on another publication, a book focused entirely on his own work!

306 by Elliot London

Filmed in Chicago in 2009, the short film306 depicts a day in the life of a young man named Eric. Without a word of dialogue, but with an effective and beautiful score, director and writer Elliot London and writer Greg Phelan take their lead through a wide series of emotions. From his first waking moment in the safety of his bed, until his return to it, at the end of his day.

I really loved London`s film, firstly due to how visually beautiful it was shot. I As Eric, actor Brian Estel is an appealing and compelling actor who within the films relatively short 10 minutes grabs you tightly and takes you with him through his day.

My only issue with 306 was the ending. The ending was not so much a disappointment (although it may have been...), it was just that everything I read about the film (and sorry I am doing it here as well) pushed a twist ending. Even when I clicked on the Vimeo link I could not help but see the first comment mentioning the twist. The fact is, I did not really think it was much of a twist, it was sort of quiet and blended in quite nicely with the rest of the film. Pointing out a twist however only set up the ending to be a bit of a disappointment. Just enjoy 306 for what it is, a beautifully filmed 10 plus minutes of moments of Eric`s day.

Theatrical: Quinn Christopher Jaxon by Bacchus Stuart

Now I know I could have simply posted these scorching hot images of Quinn Christopher Jaxon without any text and most of you wouldn't have cared less. But... these images, and the man responsible for them, are part of the reason story is such an important part of FH.

When I first saw images of Quinn, especially the 'Scottish shoot,' I was struck by how dramatic they were. Quinn has classic movie star looks complete with piercing hazel eyes. Quinn has a natural presence, masculine and intensely sexual. Photographer Bacchus Stuart clearly and skillfully weaves his extensive theatrical background within his work. As both an actor and director, Bacchus knows how to work with artists to help them relax and feel safe going to new and daring places.

Bacchus has worked in nearly every part of the theatre, film and television world. For three years Bacchus worked for Broadway Director Joe Layton and has directed plays all over Los Angeles and around the country. In film and on television he has not only acted, but worked as a production coordinator, production manager, and AD on an extensive list of productions. Some of these include; Chasers, Maximum Overdrive, The X Files, Millennium, Lovejoy, The Crow, The Butcher's Wife, Betsy's Wedding and Sleep With The Enemy.

I started doing photography when I was 10 years old. My uncle had a dark room and a 35mm camera, and he taught me how to shoot in B&W and how to process and develop (using all the chemicals) and later, how to alter/shade/shadow photos as I developed them. He also taught me how to do stop-motion photography with an old Bell&Howell 8mm movie camera (I have lots of old film of me trimming trees and the trees grabbing me and garden hoses sneaking up behind me and hanging me from trees).

Through the years, with my acting and directing in the theatre, as well as all my work in film & television, I took lots of photos of different artists that I had worked with. Unfortunately, back in 1999, my house in Wilmington, NC was literally destroyed by a hurricane and I lost all my negatives and most of my photos. I have a few photos left from that period - of Geoffrey Holder, Carmen DeLavillade, Maurice Hines, Helen Hayes and the late Tony & Emmy award winning director Joe Layton. Currently, I am learning how to clean old photos in photoshop so that I can preserve these few remaining pictures.

22 year old Quinn Christopher Jaxon is more than a model he has worked with, Bacchus is also his manager and says Quinn is his best friend. Bacchus manages the dancer and actor and says that Quinn is very giving and makes him laugh like no one else, `My days are always brighter with him in them`.

`He is literally the easiest model I have ever worked with. I think it's all of his dancer training. You tell him to do something and he immediately does it. He loves to show off! - While we were shooting, a friend of ours was sleeping on an old sofa in another room. Now this guy is straight; and Quinn, naked as the day he was born, ran into the other room, jumped on the sofa, and was popping that massive member of his all over this guy, which freaked him out! We were both laughing so hard we were crying. And Quinn, ever the pro, quickly ran back to the set, did a ballet spin and was immediately back into focus and we finished the shoot.`

'These photographs were from our third shoot together and the first time Quinn had ever posed nude, he proceeded to get an erection and it's literally the first time he'd ever had himself photographed in that state!.'

I have been enjoying all the latest work from my friend at Manuscript Photography. In the last 12 months his portfolio has grown as an incredible showcase for his talent. Jack Diesel was shot by Manuscript Photography last fall and I am happy to be able to share the results. As you can see, there is something about Jack that the camera just loves!

'I drove up to his place in upstate New York near the Catskills without much of an idea what we would shoot. But when I saw the old tool shed behind his house, I knew we had a great location to work in. Jack has a lot of experience modeling and knew how to deliver the shots I wanted. His look is masculine and rugged, but he is a very easy-going guy. He's been one of the most popular of the models I've worked with.'

I have been fascinated with the work of MStyles since first spending time immersed within it last November. One of the things I have learned, and try to share and celebrate on FH is that photography and modeling are much more than the mainstream media, both print and web usually take the time to share.

If you pick up any given issue, of any magazine whose focus is men, who might be convinced that every photographer of the male form is more skilled at photoshop than the creating of an image. You might also be convinced in order to be a model you simply need a good gym, a good hair stylist and most importantly a good razor. It is almost as if the goal is to suck every and any personality and uniqueness out of a man instead of embracing and celebrating them.

My goal honestly is not to criticize. Admittedly I purchase many of these magazine regularly. Some of these photographers and models I respect and admire and have created some of all time favorite images. My point is that this is but one aspect of the artistry of photography, an aspect that often dominates the visual world.

What I have grown to love over the past several years are images which, and artists who, explore. Instead over covering and masking who a model is, brushing and editing over flaws, shining a light and celebrating the man both body and soul.

It could be argued that no one can be completely themselves in front of the camera, the lens itself automatically causes slight changes in blood pressure, body movement and expression. What the lens cannot help but do is to whisper to the brain and let it know 'your being watched'. With this whisper the brain, out of reflex and maybe protection, simply begins to tell the body what to do. 'Sit down', 'Don't look at the lens', 'stay still'. We do many of these things all the time, but generally without actively checking in with our brain first. Whenever any of us become aware we are being watched, especially by strangers, we instinctively take on an alias. Most do so to ensures we do not gain attention and sometimes to ensure we do.

MStyles has not been able to totally quash the whisper but he has been able to quiet it down. With The Apartment Project, he has been able to lesson many of the changes a body goes through in a studio or location by keeping them in the place most of us are at our most comfortable, home. One of my favorites from The Apartment Project was his work with Carter. Carter is a natural in front of MStyle's lens and simply describes himself as 'just a young art model from VA passionate about art'.

'Carter and I came up with these image as part of an ongoing series of shoots I've labeled The Apartment Project. This series was born out of my lack of a permanent studio, and an aversion to getting bogged down in spending hours setting up lights, dressing sets, and digging through tons of wardrobe selections. For the most part, each shoot is done with the model, in their apartments using available light, natural surroundings, and everyday wardrobe.'

'This method has given birth to a number of spontaneous, realistic images that I feel are devoid of pretense, and take on the unique character of both home and inhabitant. They kind of are what they are, and I'm very proud of them. As I am quickly reaching the point where I feel I've exhausted the concept, I'm looking to compile the best of these images into a book sometime soon, and move on to new endeavors.'

'Carter's images stand out to me as a highlight, because the guy is a photographer's dream - leading man good looks, an athlete's physique, and the spirit of an artist which makes him not only insanely collaborative, and creatively giving, but absolutely uninhibited and not easily intimidated by the camera. In fact, Carter knows exactly how to play to the camera without even seeming like he's doing it, and that's what makes his photos so special to me, because they seem to capture him as himself, at his best.'

You know those big stars, the ones who would never be caught dead on American television pushing a product...you know the ones who secretly fly to Japan to make a quick buck filming ads they hope go unnoticed across the ocean. Well there is another set of celebrity, not the A list mind you but the E list...the Eighties!

Eighties stars may not be skating to success on American soil but they do seem to be finding work skating on UK ice. Skating With The Stars was an abysmal failure on US television but Dancing On Ice is alive and well in the UK with some familiar faces about to hit the ice when the show premiers on ITV this Sunday. Along with the usual slew of tv presenters and UK soap stars, Dallas actress Charlene Tilton and Corey (whats with that one long bang...) Feldman have joined the ranks. If these two had joined the US version I might have actually watched.

The Soul Comes Out: Mattia by Andrea Romano

The first shot of Mattia I saw was the image at the top of the page I used for pic of the day. I knew instantly I wanted find out who the artist was behind it and share on FH. Fun, sexy, creative with a ton of personality. The shots of Mattia in the white socks have joined my list of favorite images.

I have not had the best luck contacting artists via flickr, but photographer Andrea Romano responded the next day and once Mattia was on board the only task left was to narrow down my favorite shots.

'I've never studied photography, I'm only a beginner, an amateur and I know I've got lots of things to learn. I love to shoot people, I love portraits, and I love to use lights and shadows to show them.'

From Andrea's extensive portfolio on flickr, I would have guessed he had been shooting for years. Andrea says Mattia was actually one of his first shoots. Andrea knew Mattia through a mutual friend and always liked his look. When he asked him about shooting Mattia said 'why not?'. Andrea has shot Mattia twice now and some of the more humorous shots came from the second shoot. Mattia was free and comfortable in front of the camera and Andreas hopes to shoot him again soon with his current concentration on shadow and light.

Born in 1976, on Christmas Day in Lecce, a city in southern Italy, Andrea says that although he only picked up a camera to shoot about two years ago, he was always attracted to photography. The artist prefers shooting in black and white and likes to find 'normal' looking guys to shoot. He says often, the first time he sees a model face to face, is the day they shoot so it is important to find ways to bring personality out.

'I never ack a model to smile. I think it's a forced thing and I don't like it. So, the smile you can see in some rare shoots of mine, are extemporary and true.'

I like to shoot men naked or half/naked as I think that in this way, the soul comes out. A naked person can show his fragility, his force, his fear... I try to capture their soul with a shoot, in a movement, a look... I most interested with their soul through their nudity rather than only the nudity itself.

I want to thank all of the models and photographers who have worked with me on interviews and features the past 12 months. So many incredible images! Please check out the list (Those who inspire) and visit some of their pages. If I began to name names I would be just rewriting my list but I have to give a special shout out to Marlen Boro. It was one year ago Marlen's work first appeared on FH and about 50 posts later (and hundreds of images) I still get excited seeing each shoot Marlen sends my way. Thanks to Marlen and all the talented artists who have shared their work, and most importantly, their stories with me.
