I should have known who writer, actor and comedian Joel Kim Booster was, but it wasn't until binging the first few episode of Loot last week that I finally saw the light. I was looking for a new, smart comedy to watch. I'd just finished, and loved Vanessa Bayer's I Love That For You, when I discovered another talented female SNL alumni had a new comedy on Apple TV.
I love Maya Rudolph, but her post SNL career has had it's ups and downs. Loot is definitely an up! Watching the pilot, I was briefly worried it was going to copy the story from Schitt's Creek, but Maya's Molly doesn't lose her loot, she gets more after divorcing her husband John. (Adam Scott)
Maya surrounds herself with a talented cast including Michaela JaƩ (MJ) Rodriguez, Ron Funches and Nat Faxon. I love me some Nat and featured him on the site this past spring (HERE:). As funny as the cast was, most of my attention was focused on Molly's assistant Nicholas played by the incredibly talented, and the incredibly hot, Joel Kim Booster.
When checking out Joel's resume, I had no idea he wrote and produced the first season of another comedy I love, The Other Two. Joel also wrote the recently released Fire Island, a movie I put off watching until after discovering Joel on Loot.
I had convinced myself Fire Island was just going to be another version of the 'A Very Gay' series, but it was a well acted, well written and well produced romantic comedy. I really got invested in the relationships, especially between Joel's Noah with Will. (Conrad Ricamora). Now, could write about the tragedy of casting Nick Adams and not getting his speedo off, but I'll let it go...
Although there was some brief butt nudity, and lots of shirtless and underwear scenes, the films focus was on relationships, and I can understand why they were careful not to have too many nude scenes. The movie really explored each of the main characters and wrapped up the romantic comedy with and ending with Donna Summer's Last Dance over the closing credits.
If like me, you've put off watching Fire Island, I recommend giving it a shot. If you haven't checked out Loot yet, what exactly are you waiting for?
'We're going to Fire Island. It's like gay Disney World.'
