Vision Quest: The Weigh In

All he needed was a lucky break. Then one day she moved in.

I remember seeing 1985's Vision Quest in the early 1990's.   I remember watching with friends after picking it up from Blockbuster and thinking how 'old' the film seemed. Although it wasn't, it had that strong 80's vibe, that in the early 90's, seemed like a long time ago...   The film is a coming of age film featuring Matthew Modine as high school wrestler Louden Swain.  Louden wants to be more than just an average high school athlete, and sets his eyes on a prize most around him think is out of reach.

Without support from his father or coach, Loudon looks to Carla, a hot drifter his father has rented a room to, for support.  She helps him stay focused on his goals, leading to them falling in love.  Vision Quest marks the first professional role for Linda Fiorentino.  The role of Carla marked her first audition after graduating from drama school.

In addition to playing a wrestler in the film, actor Michael Schoeffling actually was on the wrestling team in High School.  The photo above isn'tt from the movie, but a real shot of the actor's wresting team during his time attending Cherokee High School.  Schoeffling is the 4th from the left in the first row.

Although many of us remember the film for Modine, Schoeffling and the wrestling weigh in scene, for many, the film is remembered for it's soundtrack.  Although the song list include tracks from Foreigner, John Waite, Sammy Hagar and Don Henley, it's the first major movie appearance by Madonna, and her song Crazy For You that really made an impact.  So much so, that  the movie was renamed Crazy for You in New Zealand, Australia and the UK.

It would have been nice to have seen Schoeffling in briefs like his teammates, no complaints here.  He looks hot, even sporting a mohawk, something you really shouldn't do unless you have a face like his to pull it off.
