A Year In the Life: 1999
When I was a boy growing up in the 80's, our cable included an NBC channel from New England. I remember they used to have Science Fiction Sunday's. Sunday mornings, starting at about 7a.m, they ran a lot of old science fiction shows including many from the 70's. The 70's line-up included Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers and Space 1999. I didn't really get into Space 1999, but I remember thinking how cool, but also how far away 1999 seemed to be.
Flash forward 15 years later, and I'm in my early twenties, finishing university and starting my first full time job. I don't remember anything too futuristic about 1999 except the fear at school and work that everyone's computer was going to crash at midnight on New Year Eve. I remember getting home in the middle of morning and logging on (dialing up) and after listening to the usual dial up noises, the computer worked perfectly fine. I think I was disappointed.
If Favorite Hunks had been on-line in 1999, I would have been covering shirtless boy bands, soap stars taking (a little off) for Playgirl, R.I.P for John F Kennedy Jr, George Clooney leaving ER and more than likely tons of posts on the hunks from 90210, Roswell, Felicity and Dawson's Creek .I am sure I also would have written about the rise of Ricky Martin and questioning whether any of the Friends actors could really be considered a hunk.

Shirtless boy bands: A little tame skin for teen girls eyes and some gay men's rise.
The movies were a smorgasbord with some of the hottest hunks of 90's baring their butts on screen. Although Brad Pitt (below) bared his butt a few times earlier in the 90's in 12 Monkey's and a bit of side butt in Legends of the Fall, I think there was more skin from Pitt in the promotional shots for Fight Club, than the film itself. 1999 caped the decade of the male supermodel. Up until the 90's, male models were mostly accessories, but in the 90's they came into their own. Surprisingly, it was wasn't just Marcus Schenkenberg and Tyson Beckford today's young models can thank. It was actually Fabio, who was the highest paid male model of the 90's, reaching a wider and older audience interested in knowing more about the man behind the face and body.

By the mid 2000's male supermodels began again to fade, with a slew of newer faces and younger bodies hitting the scene. It became harder and harder to make a mark with so many more men in the industry. In addition, fashion and editorial modeling wasn't the only game in town, with reality show (T.J Wilk, JP Caldreon) and internet models (Phil Fusco, Nick Ayler, Bryan Thomas) all vying for attention of lovers of the male form.

When I first started FH in 2007, I knew I wanted to look back and not just focus on the man of the moment. Some of the male models from the past were inspirations to my love of art, photography and of course the male form's representation in society. In addition, some models, like Tyson Beckford, look better than ever and are doing work, often pushing more boundaries than when they were younger. FH celebrates media men from every decade, the 90's, maybe have the most impact on me personally.

Playgirl: 1999 Highlights
I was only 'half' out in 1999, the half being just a few friends. Playgirl was still a monthly, and only $2.75! I was finally living out on my own. This meant, not having to find elaborate hiding locations to ensure my family didn't find my secret stash. By 1999, Playgirl was regularly having their models pose erect and their couple shoots were hotter than ever.

The magazine was still a little too reliant on celebrity, featuring actors and soap stars on their covers, and in usually PG, (or even G rated) pictorials inside. 1999 continued the tradition of Campus Hunks, a winter themed holiday shoot with Sean McNeil and their 'regular man' monthly feature.

Favorite models of the year for me included McNeil, Tiber Toth, Carlton Gamble, Shannon Fuller and Emmanuel Fremin. I also especially enjoyed their features with Seth Sorenson and The Ponce twins who's layouts I uploaded this week. (See the links below)

1999: A Very Good Year
American Pie
In 1999, Eugene Levy was dealing with son Jim (Jason Biggs) putting his penis into the warm apple pie he was looking forward to for dessert. Today, Eugene, who looks so much hotter than when he played Jim's dad, is busy dealing with his real son, both on and of screen in Schitt's Creek. The first American Pie was released in July 1999, and although Jason Biggs showed everything in one of the sequels, his pie hump was the scene most remember.
Varsity Blues
I didn't see Varsity Blues (released in September 1999) until it came out on VHS the following year, but I was eagerly anticipating enjoying Scott Caan's butt scene or myself. James Van Der Beek jumps from Dawson's Creek to the big screen and along with Caan and Paul Walker provided a perfect trio of hunks for the football drama and comedy.
Although Paul Walker's best nude scene in Joy Ride occurred a few years later, we got a brief glimpse in Varsity Blues.
Cruel Intentions
I still remember sitting in the theatre and those few seconds of Ryan Phillippe's beautiful ass on the big screen. Although the Phillippe had bared his buns previously, I hadn't yet seen 54 or Little Boy Blue and this was my first, and most memorable experience devouring his perfect posterior.
Cruel Intentions still holds us, both Ryan's rump scene, and the great drama and relationships between the characters. Always though the re-make should have focused on Greg and Blaine (Eric Mabius and Joshua Jackson) below.
Criminal Lovers
Can't take a look back at male nudity in cinema without including a little foreign fare. 1999's Criminal Lovers (Les amants criminels) was my first introduction to actors Jérémie Renier and Salim Kechiouche. I have followed both actors and their projects since and especially loved Renier in Faites comme si je n'étais pas là and Kehiouche in Grande école. Both Renier and Kechiouche have nude scenes in this modern day telling of Hansel and Gretel, it's Kechiouche's shower scene early in the movie that had me renting the film over and over from Blockbuster.
Any Given Sunday
I have never seen Any Given Sunday (released December 1999) all the way through, but I have watched 'the locker room' scene more than a few times. I think we all wished we were Cameron Diaz in the scene where Jamie Foxx gives us a little jock strap action and actor John Clark, (above) gives us the glorious full monty.
The Talented Mr. Ripley
I was already a big fan of both Jude Law and Matt Damon prior to seeing The Talented Mr. Ripley. (released in December 1999). Law was perfect as the sexually enchanting Dickie Greenleaf and Matt Damon showed how talented he was as the murderous Tom Ripley. No matter how many times you watch the blu-ray, Jude's junk remains frustratingly blurry, but the scene remains incredibly steamy none the less.
We all looked like Matt Damon when Jude stepped out of the bath tub.

Beverly Hills 90210: 1999
By 1999, Beverly Hills 90210 was on it's way out. Luke Perry had left and came back, Shannen Doherty had been fired and original cast members Jason Priestley and Gabrielle Carteris had left the series. Original hunks were replaced by new hunks, but the magic of the shows first three seasons was long over. All TV shows have stars and co-stars, and Luke Perry and Jason Priestley were definitely on the top tier of 90210. Although Ian Ziering and Brian Austin Green may have been second tier, at the time, both were favorites.

Although Ziering grew a little tiresome, he had a certain swagger and sexual energy that was hot in the beginning. Green was my favorite and also one of the better actors on the show. I never would have thought when watching the show back in the 90's that all four male cast members would go on to shoot nude scenes, Perry and Priestley showing it all. Both Ziering and Green bared their butts, I think the films shown below being their most memorable moments of exposure.
