Picnic: Off Broadway

Picnic
The Gym at Judson
Thompson St. NY
February 23rd - April 23rd 2017
Hal Carter played by David T Patterson

'Hal is the catalyst for a lot of the things in the play because of his physical appearance and it’s been interesting because tapping into that has been eye opening. The challenge is to make sure Hal is not just a hunk of meat, I want to bring a sensibility to him because at his core he’s just a scared young guy trying to deal with his own sexuality. I wanted people to walk out and connect to him, rather than just look at a pack of abs and the guns.'

'I stole another guy's motorcycle. I stole it because I wanted to get so far away, so fast, nobody'd ever catch up with me.'
Hal Carter

Picnic
Judson Theatre Company
Brooklyn College NY
Hal Carter played by Matt Baguth

Some of you might recognize actor Matt Baguth from his many roles on stage, film and television.  Some of you might also recognize him from a previous post on FH featuring the actors going shirtless in the play Entertaining Mr. Sloan.  Check out that post HERE:

Picnic: Phillip Shinn

'I gotta get somewhere in this world. I just gotta.'
Hal Carter

Picnic
Kansas City Actors Theatre
August 6th-13th, 2013
Hal Carter played by Phillip Shinn

'Picnic rides to some extent on the shoulders of the actor playing Hal, who must manifest toughness and sexual charisma but ultimately reveal a measure of mental anguish and even self-hatred within. Phillip Shinn’s tight body and six-pack abs (and his penetrating eyes) lend verisimilitude to the part: It’s easy to see why all the females, and perhaps Alan as well, are smitten by him. '

'But Phillip has the maturity to make Hal into more than a glorified Fonz, peeling off the layers of bravado to show the tortured soul – scarred by a disastrous upbringing – that none of his womanizing can assuage. Perhaps Madge is the answer to his pain, perhaps he to hers. We can only hope. Hey, sometimes love conquers all, doesn’t it?'
The Kansas City Independent

Picnic: Ethan Lyvers

'We’re not goin’ on no goddamn picnic.'
Hal Carter

Picnic
2016
Marshall Theatre
September 28th-October 6th
Hal Carter played by Ethan Lyvers

The original Broadway production won the Pultizer Prize and the Critics Choice award before inspiring a 1955 film that won two Academy Awards. The play has inspired numerous revivals and will be kicking off the 2016-17 season for the Marshall University School of Theatre.

Picnic: Heaps of Hals

'I don't know if its such a good idea of me goin' on this Picnic.'

Odyssey Theatre Ensemble

Since the first 1953 production, at the Music Box Theatre, William Inge's Picnic has been repeatedly performed and enjoyed, hundreds and hundreds of times all over the country.  On Broadway, in Film, in local theatres, University and high school productions.

One of the reasons is of course the writing, and the slice of Americana it presents. Although not really plot driven, it's incredibly rich in atmosphere and mood.  It's also filled with wonderfully drawn characters, characters that actors love sinking their teeth into.  The characters are also very relatable, with audience members usually able to find one they can related to.

Ross Valley Players

I think it's also been popular due to the variety of strong female characters presented.  As many of you know, local theatres and drama schools often have far more women in them then men.  Although the character of Hal Carter may grab the most visual attention, it's the women that surround him, that carry the show.

Searching the net looking for hunky Hal's was a fun, but also time-consuming task.  There were so many hot Hal's, many that didn't fit into the categories that set up.  These images, are rest of the Hals, the actors who ripped off their dirty shirts in community playhouses, on University stages, and local theatre stages.

Chapel Street Player

I deliberately chose not to credit all of the actors and photographers.  I tried,  but so many were uncredited, and I didn't want to credit some, and not others.  I was however, able to credit where each was performed, so if any of these hot Hals spark your interest, you will least know what stage they ripped their shirts off on.
