A Vintage Vantage: Beneath the Branches

'Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree...'

In this series of vintage Christmas images, the real beauty lays below the boughs and the branches.

'Come Sail Away.'

Though he may not have had much on-screen nudity, actor Hart Bochner certainly showed some spectacular skin in his speedos in this series of Instagram photos.  I first took note of the images when author and blogger Matthew Rettenmund shared the link on his site Boy Culture. Matthew's blog is one of my favorites to check out each week.

A friend tipped him off about a bunch of vintage shots of hot men in speedos enjoying themselves on a day on the water.  The boat belonged to Barry Diller, the billionaire businessman who married fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg in 2001.  Despite the marriage, it's been reported in the media that Diller is gay and was outed by columnist Liz Smith.  Smith writes that Diller spoke with her decades ago about his sexuality and asked her opinion about whether he should come out.

Boy Culture shared the link to an Instagram, (Mark Perzely) which had, and still displays this series of images. All of the photos were taken by Kevin Gill, uploaded by Perzely.  Bochner, although never tied seriously with a woman,  has never shared his sexuality publicly. He certainly shouldn't have to, it's just nice these images were shared for all us to enjoy and speculate about.

Actors & Skin: Hart Bochner

Canadian actor and director Hart Bochner was born in Toronto in 1956.  Many may know his father Llyod from his time as Cecil Colby on the prime-time soap Dynasty.  Bochner's big break came in late 1970's in the movie, Islands In The Stream, which quickly led to a series of high profile roles in the 1970's and 1980's.

Despite his long career in film and on television, and the really excellent performances he put in, Bochner never really got the fame and recognition for his talent.  Bochner also skillfully seemed to avoid on-screen nudity, despite many opportunities, and the love scenes he played.  Bochner's also appeared alongside of the big screen, and the little screen's, biggest stars.

I'm shocked he wasn't pushed to appear nude in Rich and Famous given how actress Jacqueline Bissett is famous for appearing with younger, male nude co-stars.  Bochner's character however, ends up with Meg Ryan.  We do get however, get our fair share of a shirtless Hart, most notably his furry chest in 1988's Apartment Zero, released the same year as Die Hard.

Islands in the Stream (1977)

An isolated sculptor, (George C. Scott)  is visited by his three sons just before the start of WWII.

Breaking Away (1979)

Rich & Famous (1981)

Supergirl (1984)

Supergirl never became the huge hit Superman did, but we did get a shirtless Bochner chopping wood.  We also got some paper dolls of the characters, including Bochner's Ethan.  Image above from the great site Poseidon's Underworld.

Apartment Zero (1998)

And the Sea Will Tell (1991)

Bochner, James Brolin, Rachel Ward and Diedre Hall in the 1991 TV movie And The Sea Will Tell.  No nudity, but lots of Bochner's hairy legs and chest.

Mad at the Moon (1992)

Yes a nude scene, and shapely butt, but I'm thinking a body double.  Hope I'm wrong, but without a face, and given the actor's history with nudity, it's a good guess.
