Bodies by Josh Mclaughlin

'Bodies was sort of a bucket list item that I can now check off.'

When it comes to photographing nudes, there are many descriptive slogans and catch phrases used.  Some include; Artist Nudes,  Figurative Art, Cheesecake, Beefcake, Fitness and Boudoir Photography. The phrase I use most often on FH is The Male Form.   When it comes right down to it, one of the most accurate and transparent work might be just be Bodies

Bodies is the one work title of a new collection of nudes from photographer Josh Mclaughlin.  I loved how clear and concise the title was and how it cuts right to the chase.  The other catchwords are great, but in some ways they attempt to put a bow on already beautifully decorated package.  I guess it's an attempt to distinguish art from porn.

There was a time, the difference was clear to me. The truth however, is that the line between the two is continually moving, especially now that we have cameras on our phones and are all on-line.   I think the main difference that stands out for me is whether the focus is on one specific body part, or the male form in it's entirety.   As you can see from these images, Josh' not only captures hot bodies, but the uniquely beautiful eyes, faces and emotions of the men who inhabit them.

I've been following the work of Josh Mclaughlin for awhile now, and always enjoy his updates on social media.   When I noticed Josh had recently released a new book, I wanted to check it out and see more.  Although there are some implied nudes in the book,  most of the sixty plus pages are filled with hot nude male bodies.  I chose some of my favorites from Josh's social media pages, and he also sent on a few not seen before.

Josh began shooting the male form when he was in college.  His best friend decided to give modeling a try, and enlisted Josh to take some nudes..  For Josh, it was the perfect beginning.  With his best friend as his model, he was able to experiment.  His friend had already done a few nude shoots, and had experience working with photographers.   Often, first nude shoots can be nerve wracking for photographers, but given their years of friendship, it turned out to be both enjoyable, as well as a great learning experience.

'Since I've been shooting for awhile now, I wanted to showcase the guys I have photographed over the years.  All of the models featured are ones that supported the book, and were okay with me featuring them. Bodies was kind of a bucket list item that I can now check off.'

Who were your artist influences?
I love Ethan James's work. He's located in Texas and does a lot of editorial style work.

What is your favorite part of shooting?
The creative process. I've never once worked in a studio and always make due with what I have at hand.

If you could shoot one actor or celebrity, who would you choose?
I guess it would be Chris Hemsworth. I already have one tall, bearded blonde guy I work with a good bit and jokingly call Thor. So, I might as well shoot the real deal.
