Live From New York
A Single Rose: Alexander by Studio1x
I'm always a little sarcastic about Valentine's, especially the commercial aspects of selling millions of dollars in chocolate, cards and flowers out of obligation to a date on the calendar. If the gestures were really rooted in love, a holiday wouldn't be needed. But... then, just like Shakespeare's Sonnet tells us, it's not about the holiday, or about grand gestures, it's more about the secondary qualities of love, romance and the simple red rose.
Rose are beautiful for sure, but their beauty extends beyond just their outward appearance. As Shakespeare tells us, even if the rose's petals are not crisp and a vibrant red, the beauty of the fragrance, and the motivation for giving them, holds the their true beauty, and meaning. I saw that for myself last night.
On my way home from work last night, I had to stop at the grocery store. The store I usually go to is attached to the end of a mall, so before heading into the grocery area, I wandered the mall to hit the one last bookstore in my town, and the drugstore to pick up a few things. While I was strolling down the mall, I saw a group of teenagers handing out single roses to people coming down the escalator.
I stopped for a minute to read their poster, and observe their pattern. The roses didn't look exceptionally beautiful, they were of cheaper variety, with a lighter red than is usually seen, and wilting petals on many of them. It didn't matter however. Although they gave roses to anyone who asked, the initiated saying hello, and handing over a rose, to single people, and to seniors. The first thing almost every person did when handed a rose, was lift it toward their nose to take in the flower's scent.
More than the rose itself, the scent, and the gesture of getting the rose given to them, led most of the singles and seniors to smile, and thank the teen who gifted them with it. Such a small gesture, but yet at the same time a meaningful one. Both men and women seemed so happy with their gift, and in the few minutes I stood there, several people mentioned they'd never been given flowers, or a flower before.
Turns out, the teens were from a grade 10 class from the local high school. Their teacher stood near by but at a distance. I only noticed her watching, because I was watching myself. And yes, I was offered a rose, but declined, leaving it for someone else, maybe someone who needed it more than I did as they descended the escalator.
While I picked up my groceries, I decided I'd take some notes when I got home, and maybe post about the rose next year on Valentines. Then, I remembered this series of images Jim, (Studio1x) had sent on of the stunning Alexander, and decided I couldn't wait a year to share them.
Some of you may remember Alexander from his previous appearance on FH, celebrating the Oscar Awards back in 2021. (HERE:) The red rose Alexander is holding is beautiful of course, but it's true beauty is providing a pop of color, serving to highlight the skill of the man behind the camera, and the beauty in the man in front.
