Harper Watters: Rising Star

Harper Watters
The Cavalier

'When I was a kid, I choreographed a one-man version of The Nutcracker, taking props from around the house. I took the Christmas tree skirt from the attic and made it a dress, and I would turn the lights off and just have the spotlight from the chandelier in my living room.'

Harper Watters has a passion for being bold and unapologetically himself, as evidenced not only in his onstage dancing as a Soloist for the Houston Ballet but in is viral heel treadmill videos. He’s accumulated over 138 thousand followers with his Instagram and created the YouTube web series The Pre Show, which documents the behind-the-scenes stage life of professional dancers.

His parents, seeing his creative version of The Nutcracker,  gifted their young son with  a VHS tape of The Nutcracker. (the movie starring Macaulay Caulkin) Harper shares that video got a lot of use.  Whether at Christmas time, or on the hottest day of the summer, he would sit and watch, especially the snow scene, his favorite.

'I feel like The Nutcracker is the Disney classic of the ballet world. It’s like The Lion King. It’s like The Little Mermaid. It’s the magic. People have a connection to it being on a holiday. It’s a tradition. I think it’s really nostalgic, as well.'

Roberto Bolle: The Leading Man

Roberto Bolle
The Nutcracker Prince

'For me, a professional dancer is a mix of different elements: technical mastery, interpretation and key physical requirements. Besides the physical characteristics which are a gift of nature, everything else comes with hard work if you want to become a great dancer.'

Italian danseur Roberto Bolle was born in Casale Monferrato, and lived most of his youth in Trino, a small town near Vercelli in Piemonte. Bolle first began ballet studies at the age of seven at a local school and at twelve, was accepted at the La Scala theatre ballet school in Milan.

In 1990, he was spotted by Rudolf Nureyev, who chose him to play the role of Tadzio in the opera Morte a Venezia. The Theater however, would not allow Bolle to accept the offer because he was too young.

After an appearance in Romeo and Juliette in 1996, the then twenty-year-old Bolle was promoted to principal dancer at La Scala. He left that position when he was 21 to pursue a freelance career. Since then he has starred in many ballets including; Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Cinderella and of course, The Nutcracker.

Bolle is currently a principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre and a principal dancer Γ©toile at La Scala Theatre Ballet. Bolle also dances regularly as a guest artist with the world’s leading companies, including The Royal Ballet, the Mariinsky Ballet, the Bolshoi Ballet and the Paris Opera Ballet.

In addition to all the more traditional performances of The Nutcracker, there have also been a few raunchier versions over the years.  Several Burlesque versions have become, like the original, regular events around the holidays.  Here are a few...
