A Vintage Vantage: Jerry Cooper
Last week I posted a piece featuring images of male swim teams. (HERE:) In the process of researching that piece, I came across the image of the team in the above photo. In the description, the photo was said to be of the Stanford University Swim Team from 1968. It went on to say, the swimmer, (third from the right) was named Jerry Cooper, who was also a male physique model.
There was something about Cooper's face that was really familiar. I don't think I'd seen images of Jerry Cooper before, butt there was just something familiar about his face. I think we all know someone who looks like Jerry with his handsome square face, great smile and clean-cut hair cut and look.
We all had a 'Jerry' in one of our classes in school, maybe someone we didn't really pay too much attention to until seeing him shirtless during those horrid 'skins and shirts' games in gym. Then all of a sudden, the handsome face and smile became hotter, especially after seeing him in shorts and out of his shirt.
I believe most, if not all, of these images were taken by Dave Martin Studio. Martin was a San Francisco photographer who is credited as being one of the first artists from the city to specialize in shooting the nude male form.
