ACTORS & Skin: Patrick Dempsey

'When you discover first love as a teenager, your whole life revolves around it and you open yourself up to it.'
Patrick Dempsey

Last year, I was surprised that actor Patrick Dempsey was named People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive.  It's not that he didn't deserve it, it's just that People seems to be 'delayed' with some of their choices.  Dempsey was really at the top of his 'Sexy' game, at least when it came to the press, during his first few years on Grey's Anatomy.  He and the cast were everywhere in the press in the shows early days.

I guess it made sense, I don't think the Magazine's picks are actually chosen, but more negotiated with certain actors, especially ones looking for the publicly, and who will do an exclusive photo shoot and interview. I actually started this Actors & Skin piece after the magazine came out, but put it aside as I lost a bit of interest.

My interest, and my love of Dempsey has fluctuated over the years.  I love him in all those 80's and 90's comedies and rom coms I saw him in on VHS when growing up in the 80's and 90's.  Unfortunately, Dempsey got a lot of bad press during his days on Greys, and I ended up thinking he was a bit of a self-centered ass.  But... who knows with the press, reading too much about anyone in the public eye, especially someone you like, is never really a great idea.

I wanted to go ahead however, as I have great respect for Dempsey as an actor, and the career he's managed to maintain for close to 40 years now.  Not many actors who begin their professional career in their late teens are able to sustain it, still getting leads in films and on television forty years later.

I don't think Dempsey actually gets the respect he deserves from the industry.  Despite his longevity, he still often ends up with 'sloppy seconds' when it comes to roles. Romantic leads in sequels, when the original actor doesn't return, or the runner-up in lesser coveted roles, when they can't get an A lister.  Yet, Dempsey keeps on working, and delivers everytime.

I also have great respect for Dempsey's transition from playing Duckie Dale roles, to playing Blaine roles.  Most of Dempsey's roles in the 80's were geeky, glass wearing nerds, often the virgin who was awkward around females.  By the time the 90's rolled around, he was playing romantic leads, leaving the glasses, and the geeky roles in the rear view mirror.

Some of my favorite roles that Dempsey took on were the first ones that I saw.  In addition to those 80's teen comedies, I also really loved his turns on television, including the mini-series, A Season in Purgatory.  I think that was one of the first time I saw Dempsey in a dramatic role.  I also have a fondness for his guest appearances on television, especially his turn as Aaron Brooks on Once & Again.

Despite his many years, and film success, it was his turn as Derek on Grey's Anatomy that really propelled Dempsey to stardom.   I loved Greys in it's early years, but basically left shortly after Izzie and Alex's wedding, and so many of my favorites left.

Although I enjoy Dempsey, I was never a huge fan of Meredith, therefore making it hard to root for their love story.   Given Meredith is the Grey in Greys, not liking the title character made it tough to watch after awhile. Still those early years were great, and Dempsey's first scene, (below) was memorable.

Speaking of memorable scenes, check out the two Skin parts of this Actors & Skin piece, featuring Dempsey's nude scenes in the 1980's and 1990's below.

Actors & SKIN: Patrick Dempsey, The 1980's

Patrick Dempsey began his professional acting career in 1985, and in the last five years of the 80's, Dempsey appeared in over a dozen films, including 1989's Lover Boy. (pics above and below)  Dempsey had a slew of movies and a few failed television shows, including the short lived Fast Times, (A television adaptation of Fast Time At Ridgemont High) in 1986.

Heaven Help Us (1985)

'A new transfer student to St. Basil's Boys' Prep School tries to fit in while romantically pursuing a troubled young girl.'

Dempsey's first movie, and first official credit, was playing prep student Corbet in 1985's Heaven Help Us.  The film had an all star cast led by Donald Sutherland.  Dempsey would have been about 19 at the time, and had his first nude scene, along with actor Kevin Dillon and a group of extras in a nude school swim class.

Meatballs III (1986)

The ghost of a dead porn star comes to Earth to help a nerd with his sex life.

Although he showed a hint of crack in Heaven Help Us, Dempsey' first on-screen film role, also included his first official nude scene.  1986's Meatballs III was a really bad sequel, but it did give Dempsey the chance to shine and carry a film.  For some reason, this nude scene rarely makes any list of Dempsey's nude scenes, but the 20 year old look hot in his brief shower scene.  If you want to check out the scene, I uploaded it on Sendspace HERE:   I could not get the sound to work, that seems to happen whenever the source film is an AVI.  I can't seem to get the sound to transfer when I covert it to an MP4 clip.

Some Girls (1988)

Michael flies up to French Canada to visit his girlfriend and her wacky family. Unfortunately, she doesn't love him anymore.

When it comes to his on-screen nude scenes, it's usually 1988's Some Girls that comes up.  That's because I believe it's the only time we get a glimpse of Patrick's penis.  Well.. at least in the old VHS version.  As you can see from the images and gif above, the penis in questions was cut totally out of all versions that came out after the original VHS.

Poor Patrick gets a lot of flack for the size of penis, but it's really hard to tell.  I personally love a penis on the smaller size, but given how he's sitting on bed, it's hard to really get a good look.  From the longer clip from the Blu-Ray (below) you can see that Dempsey's nude scene went on for awhile, and in front of quite a few cast members and extras.  I wonder given he was completely nude for the first part, whether he was given a sock, or just went nude through the entire scene...

Actors & SKIN: Patrick Dempsey, The 1990's

'In Los Angeles, as I gained and lost celebrity, then gained it again, I often found myself wondering why I, out of thousands like me, had become famous.'

The Escape (1997)

After 10 years behind bars from a crime he did not commit, Clayton decides to plan his escape, no matter the consequences.

If actor Patrick Dempsey had a busy, role filled 1980's, his career heated up even more in the 1990's.  With over two dozen film and television roles, some of Dempsey's most well known roles in the 90's include appearances in; Mobsters, With Honors, Outbreak, The Player and Crime and Punishment.  Dempsey also continued his run of nude scenes in the films featured here.

Bank Robber (1993)

'A small-time crook hides out in a seedy motel where shady characters recognise him and demand money to keep quiet.'

Dempsey has a short shower scene in Bank Robber, and very hot sex scene with Lisa Bonet.  Bonet is also incredibly hot in the scene.  You can download it on SendSpace HERE:

Face The Music (1993)

Exes Lisa and Charlie agree to write a love song for a movie. Charlie is getting married in two weeks. His fiancée suggests writing at her farm outside Paris for (non-existent) peace and quiet - to keep an eye on him.
