Homeland actor Damien Lewis recently said that when he was in his 20s, he became concerned that if he didn’t break out of the theatre in time, he worried that he...
'would be one of these slightly over-the-top, fruity actors who would have an illustrious career on stage, but wouldn't start getting any kind of film work until I was 50 and then start playing wizards.'
Well... The wizard of all wizards struck back! Kudos for Sir Ian McKellen for responding so wonderfully to this incredibly ignorant statement. Lewis is a good actor, and I loved him in season 1 of Homeland. Quickly though, after reading some of his interviews and seeing him on talk shows and award shows I began to think he came off as a bit of a douche. I was proved correct.

Well he did say that he felt that way in his 20s. We shouldn't judge him on feelings he had back then. He was still young and naive. His comments were most likely taken out of context. I doubt he meant to offend Sir Ian and was only being honest about his life back then. I'm willing to give the guy a break because the media tries it's best to take everything out of context and make people look as bad as possible and causing a feud with celebrities is gold for the media. Just look at the Lady Gaga/Katy Perry mess they tried to create.

While I can agree with you, Chris, that that was the way he felt during his twenties (1991-2000), his example of choice came off sounding snide and, well, douchey. After all, when he was in his twenties, the LOTR movies haven't come out yet. So clearly, his views are of a more recent (and pointedly vicious) outlook.
I have lost all respect for this actor.
