'It began the way many good stories often do—by accident.'
As much as we as humans plan and prepare, so many of our best experiences occur by accident. I know just thinking about
FH, how many stories and posts arose after seeing an image, of discovering an artist, while putting together a piece on someone or something completely different. My introduction to the work of photographer Joe Mazza, (
The Male Image) came from a piece I was doing on a model he'd worked with. This piece, also arose from a shoot very different than the one you're seeing here.
Joe was working behind the lens for one his leather/fetish clients in San Francisco.
Ryan Centofanti was one of the models hired for the project. Joe was instantly taken with with Ryan's energy and outgoing personality. In addition to being super fun, Joe also found him both grounded and mischievous, two adjectives not often used together to describe one individual.
'We got great shots and we hit it off immediately so a weeks later, Ryan was in front of my camera, this time planned and on purpose.'
In addition to his passion for kink and fetish themes, Ryan is also an avid cyclist, currently training for the Aids Life Cycle next month. The event raises for funds for HIV and STI screening and counseling, linking homeless youth living with HIV with housing and other services and supports for the LGBTQIA+ community.. Although he took a brief break, Ryan has been cycling since he was a kid, and is glad to be back on his bike, and taking part in such an amazing fundraiser. 'I have absorbed an abundance of knowledge about sexual health & diseases, the AIDS epidemic, the history of the gay community and similar topics. With having some friends who live with HIV daily and are able to live a healthy and normal life, it brings me great pleasure to be part of a fundraiser that supports the community and educates the public about HIV & AIDS issues, prevention and the stigma that still exists.'
Given Ryan's passion for cycling, Joe planned their first shoot as an outdoor shoot with Ryan riding naked on his bike. I'll be featuring those images later, but wanted to start with these shots from their second shoot together. This series was shot at Point Reyes, a popular tourist destination on the Pacific coast of Marin County in Northern California. Point Reyes is known for it's rugged coastline and majestic spaces.
I've always been struck by how beautifully Joe uses space within his work. No matter where he's shooting, whether in a studio penthouse, or a large open field, Joe always creates a visual harmonization between the model in focus and their surroundings. Although alone in the space, Joe ensures Ryan remains in focus.
Joe obtains this balance, in part, by not just the choice of location, but by also by equipping his models with themes and fashion items that bring out aspects of their personality. For their first shoot together, Joe used Ryan's love of cycling, for this second shoot, he tapped into Ryan's previous experience working as a lumberjack.
'We made an entire day out of our shoot at Point Reyes. We stopped in Tomales Bay for oysters, then headed to a wind swept field for our first location. I wanted to honor his lumberjack past so we layered him in flannel. Thirty-mph gusts of cold ocean wind blew us around as we trudged though a muddy bog to get our shots..'
FH viewers know that I love a good 'reveal', and I loved how Joe visually layered the anticipation by having Ryan in layers of clothing. As dapper as he looks in his cap, flannel and t-shirt, I enjoyed seeing each piece of clothing not only get peeled off, but also blown off by the wind. You can check out more of Joe's work with Ryan, after every piece of clothing came off, on the
