'I'm from a small town that you haven't heard of.'
It's a tale as old as time, but one that always fascinates me. A young, hot guy from rural small town, travels to big city to make his mark and find success as a model or an actor. Much like Joe Buck in the film
Midnight Cowboy,
Fischer Wixom is also a cowboy. The 22 year old is also a farmer, living on the family farm in rural Missouri. Thankfully, Fischer's trip and experience in Manhattan was more positive than Joe's time in the city.
Fischer was originally referred to Wes and New Manhattan Studios by his agency. Initially, Wes took a pass on shooting the fetching young farm boy. Even though the initial images Wes was sent weren't great, he could tell Fischer was definitely model material. At the time however, Wes was backed up with both scheduled shoots and a pile of work from past shoots that needed his attention.
That's when Marc French came in, As some of you may remember, Marc is a contributing member of the consortium of photographers that shoot with and for New Manhattan Studios. Marc had met Fischer and before long, Wes was getting messages from Marc that they definitely needed to do a session with the captivating cowboy. Marc shared with Wes that not only was Fischer well-toned and lean, he was extremely good-looking with a winning personality.
'I relented. Fortunately. Fischer was well worth adding to the half-dozen-or-so models in my editing queue.'
Wes, NMS
'I have a practice of taking models pretty much as they present themselves. I want to capture them "as they are;" in their own wardrobes and with their self-styled look. I was surprised at the start of the session when Fischer asked me if I wanted him to shave his mustache.
I have nothing against facial hair, but it does add years to a model's looks and so I have a preference for "clean-shaven" and fresh haircuts. I suggested that we start the session with the mustache and finish it without.'
It's all a matter of personal preference, so I leave it to the viewer to decide which version of 22-year-old model they prefer. Looking at the finished work, I have a distinct preference for the mustache-free Fischer. Side-by-side, the stache gives him a slightly goofy look which does not do him justice. '
Wes
It's always interesting how a relatively small change can make such a difference. For me, after Fischer's quick shave, his face seemed stronger and brighter.. There appeared to be more of a focus on it's shape, and Fischer's beautiful eyes. As they worked, Fischer shared his experiences of growing up on a farm in a small t own that he was sure neither Wes or Marc would have heard of. Turns out, Wes was actually familiar with the area.
'When Fischer shared where lived, I was astounded to learn that I knew the area very well. The family farm is about 25 miles from where my sister has had a weekend home for many years! Fischer even invited us to come to Missouri to shoot him on the farm. He even promised to find additional local models.'
As I mentioned, NMS photographer
Marc French liked Fischer's personality from their very first meeting. Marc found the young model both kind and curious, and was very eager to learn and committed to improving his modeling skills. When they started shooting, Marc could also see immedeately, that Fischer loved photoshoots and being in front of the camera.
'Fischer was just a pure joy to work with. Everything about his excitement and attitude made the photoshoot fun, playful but still professional. He was willing to follow our advice and go above and beyond by shaving his “moustache” mid photoshoot. And what a change! Two completely different looks! I’m so glad he shaved it; it made such a difference.
I was a little sad that Fischer did not have his cowboy outfit with him. It would have made for a great composition on my rooftop, with the wooden panels of the PH as a background, and the dried mixed rainbow grass next to the cowboy. When he offered to make that shoot at his family’s ranch, I had no hesitation and I am still waiting for Wes to tag along!
Marc
Let's hope Marc and Wes take that journey to the farm, nothing like seeing a hot stud in a stable! Until then however, if you want to see much more of Fischer, Wes has assembled his favorite shots of the cowboy's visit to Manhattan in a photo essay that you can preview, purchase and easily download
