'A closeted gay detective and his partner chase a serial killer who targets male prostitutes.'
When a series of brutal killings of young male hustlers awakens the police to the threat of a serial killer, rookie detective Raymond Fates (Noel Palomaria) and his seasoned partner detective Tom Ellis (Charles Lanyer) battle an intolerant police department that is indifferent to these "misdemeanor killings.
Shot in Los Angeles in just 33 days, director John Huckert and writers, Huckert and John Matkowsky give us both a creepy story, and a decent dose of male skin. Yes, given Hard is a thriller about a serial killer, some of that skin is hard to watch, but there are also several scenes with Raymond naked in the shower, and a really hot gay sex scene.
'Hard is creepy from the gate. In the opening scene, a handsome blonde drifter type picks up a young hitchhiker. The conversation turns increasingly strange until the drifter, Jack (Malcolm Mooreman), drives off the road to torture and murder the kid. It’s apparent that this is going to be the first in a string of murders by this charming psycho.'
Bright Lights Film Journal
Hard was not a perfect movie for sure, but I appreciate what Huckert and Matkowsky tried to do, and intense tone they set and maintained throughout the film. I also appreciate the balance they achieved with story, nudity, along with thrills and violence.
I wish there were more films like
Hard out there. So many similar films, especially recently, also seem to be hiding the 'homoerotic' elements, thinking they can fool audiences into watching a film they might otherwise avoid. In the end, this usually ends up watering down the film and the impact it could have had.
