The Salton Sea: Dr. Derrol by ZD Visions
'Here I am in one of my most FAVORITE places in California, the Salton Sea and Bombay Beach areas.'
Learning about new places and locations is one of my favorite parts of working on the site. Dr. Derrol has taken FH viewers to many different scenic locals on both the East and West coasts.. Derrol has stripped down to shoot deep in the woods in Maine and in the California deserts and beautiful sandy beaches.
These images were taken in the Salton Sea area by Derrol's friend Zach. (ZDVisions) I'd heard of the Salton Sea but had to head to wiki to find about more about the shallow, landlocked body of water in the city of Riverside California. The Salton Sea lies on the San Andreas Fault within the Salton Trough and stretches all the way to the Gulf of California in Mexico.
Zach and Derrol first connected several years ago when they used to work together. They quickly became friends and began going on regular hikes together. Zach is an artist and photographer, and given he's straight, he didn't really have much interest in adding naked male models to his portfolio. Derrol decided he'd change that!
During one of their many hikes, Derool shared with Zach his work as a model, and his love of taking nude shots. After getting to know one another, Derrol became comfortable stripping down and taking some selfies when they'd hit a great location during their hikes. At first, Zach just observed, but one day, after watching Derrol struggle to set up his camera, offered to take the shot. Both Zach and Derrol were always on the lookout for new locations and before long, Zach was regularly shooting Derrol on their hikes.
There are so many ruins there as well as abandoned buildings and houses. It’s the ideal spot for some fun photos and my friend Zach. He's always willing to take the shots for me. He once watched me try to balance my camera on a rock to take the perfect picture and being the very good friend he is, offered to start being my photographer!

Cloaked
Most summers, Dr. Derrol travels from his home in California to visit his family on the East Coast. Many years, I've had the pleasure of featuring the good Dr.s naked strolls through the Maine woods. (HERE:) Covid prevented Derrol from making the trip last year, but this past August, he finally made it back.
As luck would have it, heavy rains prevented Derrol from getting any good naked shots in the woods, but he did manage to venture down a wooded path upon arriving home. Derrol headed out with photographer and friend Xing from Xing Photo Studio for an Autumn and Halloween themed shoot in the woods just outside of San Diego. Off The Beaten Path: Dr. Derrol by Xing Photo Studio

As you can tell from the quote above, the original version of author Charles Perrault's Little Red Riding Hood was a little more adult, and lot less subtle about the story's themes and meanings. Red's hood was a bright red, symbolizing both scandal and blood. When Dr. Derrol headed into the woods, he was cloaked in a black hood evoking the many sinister things that occur deep in the woods.
Derrol headed down the forest path for this shoot with Xing Photo Studio. Derrol and Xing have been friends for years and met while both modeling together for PURE and YogaBear Studio. I've had the pleasure of featuring Xing's modeling work previously on FH and am happy to now be able to feature his work behind the camera.
How did you both first connect:
Derrol:
My first nude shoots outside were the ones I did with PURE the graphic novel. I met Xing on the first shoot I did for PURE. He and I have become good friends as well as doing shoots together. He is one of the kindest, smartest, talented guys I know. I can’t wait to do shoots with him!
Xing:
Derrol and I had known each other for years. Through the years, we have become good friends and especially after I started taking photos. We have gone on quite a few adventures together since then. Derrol's affinity to nature and living beings makes it very easy to photograph him in any kind of natural environment.
What prompted the concept for this shoot:
Derrol
I really wanted to do some fall shots as I love the fall and I love costumes so I brought my cape along. We were actually in a public park on a trail that is closed down so it was quite risky for me to be nude there but that’s part of the thrill right!? The fun and danger of it!
Xing:
For the most recent shoot, we decided to capture some fall colors around San Diego. We went on a hike together, and found a secluded site with beautiful foliage. The rest was very easy, just taking photos of a handsome model in the brilliant warm sunshine of an autumn afternoon.
Xing:
For most of the photos, I wanted the viewers to be able to feel that warmth, through the colors and lights, but also though Derrol's smiles. We did take some photos with Derrol wearing his cape. While editing those photos, I tried to lean towards an "Assassin's Creed" aesthetics, and making them look mysterious.

How did Xing's time in front of the camera impact his time behind it?
Derrol
I definitely think he knows exactly what he wants to get from a pose with the lighting as well as the shape of the body and he very clearly is able to convey to me what he wants to see
Xing:
I think the modeling experience has definitely had an impact on my photography. From the way I approach my models, to the verbal directions I give, even the style I edit my photos. Above all, I think I developed more appreciation for the beauty of human body. My photos tend to have few accessories in them, because I want the model to be the center of attention, not otherwise.
'I was a bit late to stopping and posing nude. I did a play many years ago called ‘Party’ where we all got nude for the play and that slowly broke me in. Always loved getting naked in nature and after turning 40 I just said, what the heck!? Life is short and it’s time to live it up NUDE! '

DrDerrol: Back on Track
DrDerrol
Normally at this time of year, DrDerrol is organizing dates for his summer trip home to Maine. I've been fortunate that Derrol has chronicled and shared his adventures through images and selfies, especially his naked hikes through the Maine woods. (HERE) Last year, as with so many, Derrol's trip had to be put on hold. Thanks to Covid, last summer marked the first time in 25 years that Derrol hadn't made it back home.
Although he could hike through Maine last summer, Derrol still managed to find some quiet places to hike, this time closer to his home in Southern California. This series was taken by a friend of Derrol's that he was hiking with. Derrol decided to put his hiking buddy to work. Although his friend was straight, and hadn't photographed anyone naked before, given the location, there were certain shots and areas, where selfies weren't really an option,. Thanks to Derrol, and his friend!

DrDerrol: State of Maine

Growing up in the 80's, predigital, vacation images were usually only seen after the return home. Now I know most families took their film to the one hour photo, but our family waited weeks or months as to save a little money, my mom send them away in the mail to be developed. Back then, people even had vacation picture parties, with slide shows or albums for guests to enjoy.
Usually I avoid others vacation images, but I make exception with DrDerrol, especially with his yearly trips to visit family in Maine. I love Maine, and have visited many times myself, but I also love Derrol's naked Maine adventures, from his naked nature walks, to last years trip with the ultra hot shots of Derrol grabbing his ax for some naked wood cutting. (The Maine Event)
You can almost smell the woods, the pine and the Maine air in Derrol' s images as he uses his camera, to take us along for his naked hike. I liked a few of Derrol's Instagram friendly images and he graciously sent on a few images, more FH friendly,, for me to share. Today, we're able to enjoy vacation images in real time, and Derrol's still enjoying his time with family, and his time away from family... in the beautiful State of Maine.
'Finally had some time away from family and got into the woods where I love to be. Next best thing to being in the woods is being NUDE in the woods! Never really feel like I can hike and be naked in the woods in California because there are people literally everywhere whereas in Maine you can go a whole day or two without seeing another person if you want...and that’s exactly what I want!'
'There’s also something about ‘private time’ with myself (if you know what I mean) out in nature that feels better than at home...those pictures may be too naughty for this page haha!! Definitely gonna try for one or two more nude hikes before I head back to the west coast and city life!'

DrDerrol: The Maine Event
'All alone in the woods of Maine with nothing but me and my camera... Looks like I MAY have forgotten my safety gear.'
I can't exactly say that I spent my childhood summer's in Maine, but I can say I spent many summers as a kid driving through Maine. Usually I was in a car driving North, South or East of the The Pine Tree State, but I loved my drive through's and the stops along the way. One summer we did beg our parents to stop at Old Orchard Beach and I almost regret that they said yes... Our stop was so quick, it only had me wanting to stay and enjoy the area longer.
It was perfect timing then, that as spring officially turned to summer last week, Derrol (DrDerrol) sent on these shots from Maine. Many of you might remember Derrol from my previous piece featuring Derrol's work on The Pure. (Paint Removal) There's no body paint this time, just Derrol, his camera and the captured sites while visiting his family in Maine.
'It’s always nice to get back home for a visit into the woods of Maine and away from the hustle and bustle of California! I’m always happy when the family is away for the day because that means I get to have some naked time in the woods...the woods and being naked! Two things I love!!'
Whenever I visit home, whether for a day, or a week, I always find myself needing a break from my family. I love them dearly, but not having lived there for awhile, it can be stressful trying to integrate back into the rhythm and schedule of our parents and siblings. My dogs were always my saving grace, those nightly walks served a different purposes for myself and the dogs. Let's just say, we all felt relieved through the experience.
For Derrol, his 'alone' time away was a naked walk in the woods. Without worrying too much about the additional delicious spots for ticks to latch onto, Derrol strolled through the Maine woods with just his camera to catch the sites. It is also lupin season in the North East, and lupins always ensure nature's pathways are lined with brilliant pinks and purples.
As well as my drive thru's, when I think of Maine, I think of all the summer's I spent there via Stephen King. King is my favorite author, and his tales of Maine always weaved the local flavor with of course a dash of the sinister... Derrol's adds a sexy sprinkle of sinister in the shots with the axe, and of course his wood.

Paint Removal with DrDerrol
'I'm a dorky, dark haired, dark eyed, short, tattooed, shy guy. I work hard to become and embody whatever vision the photographer has.'
One of the best parts of Halloween, is putting on a costume and inhabiting a character. Many people, choose characters with physical attributes and personality traits far from our own. With Halloween now in the rear view window, it's now time to take off the costume, wash off the make-up and let go of the persona we lived in for the night. Sometimes that process can be a pain, but when the model is DrDerrol, and what is being removed is body paint, it can also be incredibly sexy and in an odd...kind of reverse way, equally transforming.
PURE is a story built around the small nation of Seyns. It is governed by 7 feuding Western defined families; each with unique characteristics. They are privileged. The privileged don the ornate clothing and jewelry of money, beauty, and corruption. Their golden exterior and sky blue eyes belie any preoccupation with altruism, for the commoners serve as mere stepping-stones to money, power and useless things.
Many of you might remember my post from earlier this year featuring YogaBear Studio's images of Anthony Dortch's The Pure. (HERE: DrDerrol joined Anthony and YogaBear Studio late last year for a session shooting the latest images of The Pure. After the shoot, the crew headed to the beach to wash off the body paint and the characters they had taken on in front of the camera. This 'washing off' was also worthy of chronicling and shot by photographer Greg Puhl.
'Working on 'The Pure' series with Tony Dortch and David Gray. I started working with Tony in 2012 as a live model in his art show (my friend called looking for someone who was comfortable wearing a harness so he called me haha!) I was nervous, but as soon as I was painted up and in costume, it was a great time! I got into my roll and went with it. At the time I didn't realize that it would become such a big part of my future! I feel very lucky to be a part of the project. It's a great story and I've made some life long friends from it! Also, working with David Gray has been amazing. The after effects he adds to the pictures like this picture of me and my Phoenix tattoo just blow my mind. He makes you look SO good!!'
Derrol Murphy (DrDerrol) describes himself as naturally shy, yet through his work as model is beautifully expressive. Like most us, life has dealt Derrol his fair share of of good times, as well as tough and painful times. So many of Derrol's life experiences are artistically chronicled in the body art that decorates so much of his body. Derrol's honoring and celebration of experience, is a source of both strength and protection and I was interested in the experience of covering his body art, and then removing the covering at the end of the shoot.
'During this shoot at Blacks I met a very cute guy and chatted with him quite a bit, all while painted yellow and naked. The odd part of it is if I wasn't painted I never would have been able to chat with him due to my extreme shyness (naked or not!) Also, hadn't really taken into consideration how much attention we'd draw on the beach and so many people took pictures of us and we took naked selfies with people which was a first for me...so my 'business' is out there floating around more than just within the project!'
I notice you're with Brockton, (whom I featured recently on FH), this seems like a very model focused shoot, What was it like stripping down, and washing off with a group of models? I would guess the vibe would be very different than in solo shoots with photographers.
'Yes! Brock is a really great guy! This past shoot was my third time working with him I believe and he definitely has helped talk me through some of my hangups and helped make me feel a bit more comfortable in y own skin and we've become friends through the process. I think the group setting, for me, is easier, the one on one can be difficult because I hate the focus being all on me, I get nervous and even shyer until I get to know you.'
'My first nude experience was actually a nude play. It was a very positive experience though I'm still not entirely sure how I did it!! It was a play called 'Party' by David Dillion. Performed it here in San Diego and New Orleans. I like to push myself out of my comfort zone so I just did it and it was a great experience!
'After that I did a lot of shoots where I would show my butt, but not frontal nudity. It has only been very recently I have done that. I had lots of hang ups about it. Family and friends seeing me naked, the worry of it being considered pornographic and I'm super self conscious, but I just decided the only way to get over it was just to do it and get it out there! I figure it's Art so it's ok! Haha!'
'I became involved in The Pure when I was contacted through a mutual friend in 2012 for Tony's project. Tony was in need of someone who felt comfortable (or could fake comfort well as in my case, lol) walking around half naked, painted and wearing a harness during his art show so I was contacted. I was nervous at first, being behind a camera and/or on stage is way different than being 'in the crowd' but I did it anyway and I'm glad I did! David and Greg I met later due to their connections to the project. I am Zebulon (Ze) Dolle'. Only son of Zephyr Dolle'. After being in the military I took the position of HR of Dolle' media. The media family all have drones but Tony wrote my drone in as a special Spider drone due to my real life love of spiders!'
'It was super weird having my tattoos covered. I consider my tattoos to also be a sort of armor for myself. It tells people my story and to have them gone was very interesting, like part of me was missing. Some in the project who did not meet me until the paint came off were shocked that I have so much tattoo work. Shooting the body paint removal was relatively new, we have DESTROYED many a bathroom and MANY towels during this project!! This was by far the easiest and quickest way to clean it off, though truth be told, you still find some paint on yourself days later!'
'I have come to realize that I let my shyness and social awkwardness hold me back from doing what I have wanted to do most of my life. Now that 40 is approaching in a very short year, I figure I better get it done now, no more time to waste!! Not that I mean I will stop after I hit 40, more like I will keep pushing onward to make up for time lost!! I have been trying to live the phrase "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway'...
