'He had answered a post I put on the wall of a gym, and I was astonished when he came up the stairs because I had spotted him months earlier at a 4th of July celebration but could not get through the crowd to talk with him.'
'He was a great looking guy, and really nice, but to be honest was a dud in front of the camera. I thought he might prefer posing with another model, so I showed him images of some female models to shoot with. He wasn't the least bit interested, but pointed to a nude of a male model and asked if shooting with him was an option.'
Whenever I post about Robert John Guttke I mention his stories. Even with love of of photography, painting, sculpture and music, storytelling was his real passion. Robert was always working on a short story or a book. Even when struggling with health issues, Robert was sending me chapters of a novel he was working on. Some of you may remember he even worked with George R.R Martin on an episode of Beauty and the Beast.
When it came to his work with male couples, there were very few stories that I could find. Robert spent a lot of time shooting men together, but it was mostly G and PG rated images for calendars and for sports teams and charities. The holiday image at the top of this post was one example he sent when I asked him about his work with male couples.
Robert also didn't really shoot many male couples, and these images are the only ones he sent along. I also think Robert found shooting two men together less challenging. Robert wasn't into the erotic elements as much as the architectural and I think he felt less inspired with poses when the couples were attracted to one another. One couple however Robert did share stories about wasn't a romantic duo, but a set of hot male twins...
They were really nice guys but weren't really into modeling. They mostly liked being naked with hot female models.
The twins, as Robert noted, were primarily interested in posing, and possibly hooking up with female models. Robert did however, also get to shoot them alone. Like many sets of twins, there was one more dominate personality than the other. He was worried about them looking 'sexual' and hated the way most photographers of the male form shot twins. Robert felt the same way and enjoyed the challenge of creating dynamic poses for the brothers. There was one other interesting fact I always remember about the twins.
'One twin was also circumcised where as his brother was not... never got an explanation about that. He kept whispering to his brother to pull back his foreskin so they would match... which seldom stayed in place....'
When they were posing with a female model, all three were usually entwined. When just the two of them, I usually had them fighting or moving. They were close, but other than a hand touch, not entwining. .One twin was more shy than the other and worried about comparisons being made about his penis size compared to his brothers. Eventually loosened up and his SOLO work produced some masterful imagery.
