More ass with more class! Angus Malcolm presents The Warwick Rowers!

It's that time of year again! One of my favorite photographers, Angus Malcolm is back again with another year of incredibly hot shots of The Warwick Rowers. Unlike the Stade and ARL calendars (which I do love), the less 'glossy and photoshopped' shots Angus presents provides a real feel to the images with a hot intimacy as you get to know the actual rowers, not model types brought in for the shoots. This year, we also get a video!!!

Angus, who has just had a successful exhibition in Sydney and is about to be published in a new coffee table collection of male nudes, is very excited about how this year’s calendar looks

“What people have told me they love about the previous calendars is that they’re funny and charming, and sexy without being too explicit – after all, these aren’t porn stars, they’re just a nice bunch of guys who love their sport and want to help their club. We’ve think we’ve succeeded in keeping that feel, while also creating images that are going to look great on the wall.”

The men at Warwick Rowing have stripped off once again to raise funds for their club. You can have them on your all next year and in return, your support will help them to purchase new equipment, and particularly a much-needed new boat. The calendar is available as an art quality printed calendar or as a set of high resolution downloadable images. As well as the calendar, the boys are offering two sets of bonus images – one set is group shots, and the other is solo snaps of some of your favourite guys…

As stated above, this year you can also get a film of this year’s calendar shoot, with a professionally filmed and edited look behind the scenes at the making of the calendar. Shot in full colour at broadcast-quality, this film will show these boys as you’ve never seen them before. If you like the calendar, you’ll love the film!

The rowers were thrilled that last year’s calendar achieved 200,000 downloads and sales to more than 25 countries. So this year they are giving a share of profits from sales of the film to Sport Relief, a fantastic charity that works with the BBC to help vulnerable people around the world.

Stroke: Warwick Rowing 2013

'As sportsmen, we believe that everyone should be empowered to to fulfill their potential and be true to themselves'.

I have been covering the Warwick Rowing calendar and video for the past several years. (Check out previous posts HERE:) I am not sure the project, or the rowers, would have reached such incredible success without the talents of photographer Angus Malcolm. Angus has an eye for capturing the most incredible images of boys on the verge of becoming men. Boys At The Lumina was a favorite feature of mine, the images so breathtaking. Angus has the unique ability to capture not just the body, but the spirit, that essence of youth, the energy that is the core of the men in front of his lens.

This years calendar was completely sold out off the advance publicity around the video and Angus tells me that it went viral before they had really begun the publicity campaign. As soon as I saw my first image I headed over to purchase one but they were already completely gone! I can't be disappointed however as the calendar's proceeds go towards The Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation which he created to combat homophobia and bullying.

Still available however is the behind the scenes video of the making of the calendar. In the video, Brokeback Boathouse, you get a look behind the shoot with Angus and the Warwick Rowers! The video is truly amazing, I think my favorite calendar shoot video ever. The video, like the images, captures such spirit and fun, something some of the other calendar creators have long abandoned. It is available for download now on the Warwick Official Site. You can also check out downloads for hundreds of images from the shoot.

Here are some of the incredible images created by Angus along with some captures of the process from the 2013 behind the scenes video.

'We got slightly slammed last year for blurring, but we had no choice - several of the guys hadn't really understood that creating implied nudity on film is a very different game to creating implied nudity in a still image. I didn't want to compromise or upset anyone, so we blurred out almost all of the frontal nudity. As a result, I spent a lot of time with the guys this year, explaining that if we were going to use blurring, we might as well not bother making a film, because it just annoys people to know that the goods are there on display, but they aren't being allowed in on the secret.'

'Inevitably some guys have been braver than others about putting it all out there, but I think they've all been very sporting about letting some of the really racy shots stay in so people feel they've got value for money. Certainly, the unanimous story so far from purchasers has been that it's a bargain!'

Boys At The Lumina by Angus Malcolm

'Male erotica suffers badly from over stylization, over sexualisation and in turn loses much of its artistic integrity in the process'
Angus Malcolm

At the end of last summer I had the pleasure of coming across the work of Angus Malcolm from Barnsbury Studio. I have covered Angus' work in several post since which included a selection of my favorite shots (HERE:), his work with model Tom R (HERE:) and his work with the Warwick Rowing Team (HERE:).

'Back when I was pursuing photography, my vision of what my work would look like paralleled the way Barnsbury shoots his models. Simple, clean images with basic backgrounds and fashion used to make the model look good, not the other way around. Barnsbury's models also look real, with natural looking make-up and minimal manscaping.'

I wrote the paragraph above in my first profile of Angus's work. I love the simplicity of forum so beautifully showcased in his work. Angus discusses the difference between naturalism and illusion within male erotica and although there is an element of illusion in every photo, his work clearly focuses on the natural rather than the stylized.

Lumina is the name of an apartment building in Sydney’s Darlinghurst. A recent trip to Sydney inspired Angus to create a portfolio of the unique individuals that make up the city, the distinct summer light and the serenity of the harbour. Those images are now a part of a Angus' first Australian exhibition, MARDI GRAS - HOT IN THE CITY beginning February 17th at the Iain Dawson Gallery in Syndey.

They're Back!!! The Warwick Rowers by Angus Malcolm

'I've aimed to create a lot more "captured moments" No more static shots with strategically placed oars!! I've shot a lot content, and I'm convinced it's going to be our best calendar yet!'

Oh how many lovers of the Warwick Rowers have cursed those strategically place oars! I have been following and covering the the work of photographer Angus Malcolm since 2010. The past few years, myself, and thousands upon thousands of other fans of his imagery, have anxiously awaited news, and images from the latest collaboration between Angus and the guys from The Warwick Rowing team.

For the last four years, the senior men’s rowing team at Warwick University have been getting their kits off for calendars and films to raise funds for the sport and for charity. It has been interesting to watch the success of the calendars and videos. Some other groups and teams seem to have lost a bit of steam, changing photographers and themes. As they try to reach a new and diverse audience, they seem to have lost more viewers than they have gained.

With Warwick, the key has been without a doubt Angus. His work with the rowers, and the resulting images, have remained consistently fresh, sexy and on focus. Angus has not tried to change his subjects by trying to make them high fashion models or created elaborate themes or concepts to generate buzz. By shooting the rowers, in their own environment, in situations, (albeit naked...) that are familiar to them, the anticipation and audience has grown each year.

'We will fund our outreach programme entirely from our calendar and film sales, and we will do everything we can to make this work. If you can help us to cover our production costs, we can promise to more than return the favour with goodies and special offers just for you. This will include an opportunity to come and join us for a naked photo-shoot (you can keep you clothes on but we won't!) and an exclusive film of the shoot with more nudity than we have ever allowed before!'

The focus of their charity work has been a new sports-based campaign to combat bullying and raise awareness in schools about prejudice and particularly homophobia. Angus tells into the last three weeks on our crowdfunder project to cover production costs of the 2014 calendar and film. Last years endeavor was a HUGE success and just over a week ago, four of the boys went along with Angus to open a new sports training facility at the LGBT Centre in Birmingham, the UK's second biggest city. They will also be helping to open the Pride Games in Birmingham in August, and plan to do a lot more work with the gay community after the amazing response to their stance on homophobia last year.

Angus Malcolm presents Blue September

Some of the most exquisite images I have had the pleasure of sharing on FH have come from photographer Angus Malcolm. (Angus Malcolm on FH) Angus spent much of last year working and showing in Australia, but is now back in the UK working on his third calendar for University of Warwick Boat Club. Angus also tells me this years calendar is coming with a much anticipated video.

One of Angus' latest projects has been shooting for Blue September. The Blue September campaign is to educate men to become more aware of what they need to know about cancer. Angus used members of the Warwick rowing team in the campaign and featured model Chris was an inspiration due to his own battle with cancer.

'Chris is living proof that you can come out the other side looking and feeling great'

Warwick Rowing Team by Barnsbury Studio

This past September I discovered the work of Angus Malcolm of Barnsbury Studios. I fell in love with the way he shot his models. Clean, classic, simple shots. I did two posts, one featuring a variety of images (HERE) and another with actor and model Tom R, (HERE) one of my favorite guys shot by Angus.

Barnsbury studios just completed a great new project, shooting a calendar for the senior men's rowing team at Warwick, one of the UK's top universities. Angus said the shoot was different fro his normal normal style of shooting, 'less fashion-oriented, less studio lighting', but, the images are really spectacular, encompassing the same magic Angus brings to his studio work.

Since the success of Stade, this time of year, many sports teams come out with calendars. I must say this one is without a doubt my favorite. While I loved the first few years of the Stade calendars, they seemed to have forgotten the reason many of us were so in love with the first few versions. Angus Malcolm's work for Warwick actually has the look, feel, even smell of University and although posed, the models and shots look like they were captured in a real moment and not one created by make up and wind machines. The Warwick team looks natural and Angus captures them beautifully.

The University of Warwick Boat Club is a large and highly active sports club with substantial ambitions. Substantial ambitions, mean substantial costs. Following the overwhelming response to their first naked calendar in 2010, Warwick University's senior rowing team have stripped off again. Over a dozen of the rowers are baring all to raise much-needed funds to meet the needs of the club for the 2011 year.

Thanks to Angus Malcolm from Barnsbury Studios for sharing some of the calendar with FH! Be sure to check out more of Barnsbury's work on MM HERE:

The Warwick Rowers: Be Part Of The Story!

They'll Make It Very Rewarding!

This mark's the fifth year I have covered the work of photographer Angus Malcolm and incredible work of the Warwick Rowers. I will be sharing lots of info and images between now and the release of the calendar and video, but for now you must check out the preview video encouraging lovers of the project to become a part of the magic with Crowdfunder 2015. Let the excitement begin!

'We really put a lot into making it our best yet. I wanted to do more than show skin - I wanted to enable people to make an emotional connection with the boys, to understand who they are and why they do this. They're the questions I get asked most often! Of course, I think we do a good job of showing some skin, too, and I think we do it in the best possible way. The boys show they have a healthy relationship with their bodies, with nudity, with being admired by whoever cares to look, and with being naked around each other. And they're also in control - these guys are not being exploited, not selling themselves short, and not being coerced into doing something they don't want to do.'
Photographer Angus Malcolm

It is perfect the Warwick Rowers are using 'Be Part Of The Story' for this years campaign to raise funds to fight homophobia! One of the reasons I think the calendar has been such a success is that Angus and the Rowers have worked exceedingly hard to not just take incredible pictures, but to share a story. Getting to know the Rowers as people beyond the images and bodies is a large part of why more and people connect to the project and the work. A connection has been created, between the Rowers and their supporters and it continues to grow each year. I can't wait to see more of what they have in store for us in 2015!
