A Baker's Dozen: Samuel Boux

'Sam reminds me of an old soul living in a young man's body - he's very introspective and wise beyond his years. He's very secure with who he is and focused on realizing his dreams. '

I was first introduced to model and musician Samuel Boux by photographer Chris Teel in 2010.  Over the next three years,  I featured the Montreal based model ten times, showcasing his work with several different photographers.  There was something special about Samuel, something almost ethereal in his look, his poses, and his beautiful face.  There was also a bohemian vibe to Samuel's imagery, an expression of his free spirit from his nude body, his movements and and his expressive hazel eyes.

One of my favorite pieces was one Samuel himself suggested.  In 2010's Métamorphose,  Samuel shared his struggles in school as a loner and outcast, and the steps he took to make changes in his life.  Samuel l also shared an older, almost unrecognizable image which highlighted both his physical, and spiritual transformation.

Métamorphose

Do your recognize the guy above?

Most likely unless you have a very keen eye you will not. But...if you read FH on a regular basis you will know him. I have posted about him several times over the past 4 or 5 months. The photo is from 2008, to show you his transformation.

In his own words, here is his story.

'I was always an outcast a loner. I was not like any of the other kids and didn't do anything they did, I preferred doing my stuff on my own.

In high school, I joined the football team because it was the 'cool' thing to do, I was a linebacker and fairly good, but I didn't liked it very much.

In college I stopped football and took marketing. It was awful... so boring. One day in my second college year I took all my school books and put them in the trash, I was done with school.

One thing that I did love in school was a trip we made to Costa-Rica. I picked up the guitar in February 2008 right after I came back from the trip.
I continued practicing guitar everyday, I moved 3 times in that period also, family issues. Guitar changed me completely, made me exercise again, became vegetarian and now vegan(I do cheat and eat free-range farm eggs sometime)
I came out in October 2009 and started modeling about at the same time after I had lost all the weight (from 190 to 130).'

Can you guess...

Samuel Boux

Earlier this summer Photographer Chris Teel introduced me to model Samuel Boux. At first I was enchanted by his look and work in front of the camera. Quickly it became his music that took me over. I have written before that Samuel's songs have become a part my days. After my work day is done and the dogs are walked I like a few moments listening to Samuel to ease me from my day to whatever is going on in my evening. Thanks to Samuel for sharing not just your photo's, not just your music, but your story.

Samuel has a new song out this week "La Rivière qui Chante". Take a listen at REVERBNATION HERE:

Samuel on his music:
'I used to listen to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Beatles on vinyl all day because there was no tv or computer for a while at my first house before my 3 moves.
Now i like Gypsy Kings, City and Colour (Dallas Green), Don Ross(acoustic guitarist). I like classical and ambient/trance music as well.
My dad has been playing for 40 years now, I also get that a bit from him, but he plays a completely different style mostly blues/rock.
I cannot read music, therefore when I record a song I will never play it again and instead compose a new one each time. I finger pick, never used a pick.'

Samuel Boux by Matt Kulisch (October 2010)

Matt's work with Samuel parallels the feelings I get when listening to Sam's music, beautiful, soothing, peaceful and ethereal.

'Matt is a lyrical artist who has also a passion for photography, he keeps his photos real and simple, one of my favorite so far.'
Samuel Boux

'Working with Sam is a gratifying experience for a photographer! He brings the precision & attention that comes with career-mindedness, and also an inadvertent lucidity that invites art. In the end, when everything comes together, working with Sam just doesn't feel like work: it's fun & interesting, opening & natural, good & good & good.'

'I am interested in the articulation--through image--of Desire and Distance. As Sontag says, "all activities that...can be conducted from a distance, and with some detachment." I think art, especially photography, necessarily requires that distance.'
Matt Kulisch

Samuel Boux in the Hotel California

One of my favorite models to cover on FH is Montreal's Samuel Boux. I am sure you will remember Samuel and his music from my previous posts featuring the work of photographer Chris Teel who introduced me to Samuel earlier this year. Samuel moved to California this past summer and recently met up with Fearless Project creator Justin Violini when he visited the St. Francis Hotel while in San Francisco. Be sure to see more of the hot shots and read more about the shoot over at The Fearless Project HERE:

Samuel Boux by Chris Teel

Samuel Boux has a beautiful face. Samuel Boux has a beautiful body. But after spending the last half hour listening to his music, I would have to say it is his fingers, his talent, that I love the most. Before you do anything else, you must head to Reverbnation and click on his cover song Zanarkand. Sit back, close your eyes and let it take over.

The 21 year old French Canadian recently moved to San Francisco to pursue modeling and music on a full time basis. Chris Teel, who was introduced to Samuel on Model Mayhem was able to connect with him in Montreal before Samuel headed South.

Chris Teel says:

"Sam reminds me of an old soul living in a young man's body - he's very introspective and wise beyond his years. He's very secure with who he is and focused on realizing his dreams. He lives a vegan lifestyle (he's lost over 70 lbs in one year as a result of his diet)."

Chris tells me the shoot with Sam took place at a B&B he stays at when in Montreal. "The owner likes what I do so he lets me use various areas, indoors and out to shoot. These shots were taken in the alleyway behind the B&B, about a block from a major street."

There is something almost preternatural about Samuel. His beauty, his eyes, especially as captured through Chris's lens, an almost mythical quality about him. When I first saw these shots I was reminded a bit of 'Puck' from Midsummer Night's Dream. I of course had to ask Chris about the feathers.

"Originally we were going to do a 'punk'-inspired shoot but after working with Sam for a couple of hours on other concepts, and after getting to know his personality, the punk shoot didn't feel like it was going to work. Its important to me that the model's personality comes through in the image and we were fortunate in that the stylist who was helping out happened to have a feathery headband in his bag. He put it on Sam's head and we knew, at that moment, the direction we needed to take for that part of the shoot. The end result is, I think, one that combines fashion and nature, portrayed by a sexy young man in touch with himself and the world around him."

These shots are just a small sample of Chris and Samuel's work together. I encourage you to head over to Fine Art Photography By Chris Teel to see much more of Samuel!

Thanks to Chris Teel for sharing his work with FH!

Quaternate: Chris Teel

When I think of favorite Canadian photographers of the male form, the first name that comes to mind is Chris Teel.  I have featured Chris' work more than any other Canadian artist, more than almost any other artist for that matter.  Starting back in 2009, Chris and I have collaborated on over 75 pieces, all of which are linked below.  We also worked together on 2011's Model search which saw Matt Eldracher taking the crown.  I originally did a Quaternate piece featuring Chris' work back in 2016, but it really needed an update!
