A Jump Ahead: Mickey by Shax Carter

'Mickey was by far the most comfortable in the cabin/woods locations.'

Earlier this week, I featured photographer Shax Carter and his work with the carnally captivating Mickey. (Intimate Portraits) The first post, featured images of Mickey from Shax' first book, Mickey One,  featuring his multiple shoots with Mickey.  This piece, featured images from Mickey Two, the second, and more extensive collection of images of their creative collaboration.

If you liked the first book, you're going to really love the second.  If the starter wet your appetite for more Mickey, the, the entrĂ©e will definitely leave you favorably full and satisfied.   The second volume features over 200 pages and is available in both a hard cover version, and a PDF version you can download immedeately.

Mickey Two feature Mickey heading onto the back porch, and into the woods, for an erotic romp in the forest. I love seeing Shax's shots of Mickey relaxing on the porch, playing in the woods, climbing tree's and lathering up in mud.  Mickeys is obviously excited to be naked and free in the forest, beautifully supported by the many erection shots included.

As delicious as Mickey's hot body is, his face and beautiful eyes are equally parts of the package. Some of the hottest shots, and some of my favorites, are Mickey in his plaid boxers and white Calvin briefs.  Mickey also seems so natural playing in the woods. Seeing him running and playing only adds to the erotic enjoyment of the images.  In the first post, I gave my commentary on the book, and Shax's work with Mickey. I also included a few of Mickey's quotes from the book.  For this post, I asked Shax about their shoots, and what made working with Mickey so creatively satisfying.

How did you first find, and connect with Mickey?
Mickey reached out to me through my website, and asked about potentially becoming a model. He had seen some of my work and was interested in trying it out. I didn't find this out until later, after our first shoot, but he was inspired by some of the photos on my website, and wanted to try doing some similar work, mainly some of the cowboy photography I did with Jason. That also ended up being a springboard for creating more character situations, and taking some of the previous ideas done with other models even further.

Given he's new to modeling, what sort of discussions did you have before the shoot?
After filling out an application and some initial discussion, I explained to him that I like to do an introductory photo shoot with new models initially, and to gage their natural ability to model. He liked the idea, and we set a shoot up near where he lived.

When did nudity come up, from the beginning?
I don't feature any nudity on my website, and that was one of the questions he asked. It was something he was interested in trying.

Was he at all nervous when you began shooting nudes?
I think he was more ready to do that than anything else, as he was mentally prepared for it. We started our first shoot with some exteriors, walking around the city and getting various poses, which really relaxed him and it allowed us to build up a nice rapport, before switching to interiors and continuing our work there.  Once we started shooting the nudes, we just eased into it. He was prepared mentally, and was almost a jump ahead of me

He seems so natural in front of the camera, was it natural or something you worked on?
At first, when we did our initial shoot there was some instruction. He had a bit of stiffness, as most new models do, that had to be overcome. I try to make the work as fun and enjoyable as possible, just to ease into everything and help them relax. With Mickey, it didn't take long for him to get the feel of the work and bring his natural personality to the forefront.

Was was your favorite part about working with Mickey?
By the time we started our second shoot together, Mickey was developing his own style of modeling and it was really exciting to see what he was going to bring to each setup. One of the things I enjoy the most is sitting back and letting the model bring their ideas to life. Mickey was able to do that, creating the characters himself, and taking the ideas we discussed and running with them. I was able to take his ideas and set the stage for them and just let him go, watching his various characters come to life.

Were there any themes that you shot that were challenging?
I would say the most challenging theme was the work we did involving paint and mud in a dense wooded setting. The logistics of that proved to be complicated and although the idea of it was great, I think the difficulty in executing it was pretty challenging, mostly for Mickey. Being nude in the woods in the afternoon heat, covered in paint and mud, along with the bugs and natural terrain of the environment was pretty stressful. However he was very determined, and I think he pulled his ideas in that situation off very well.

Do you plan 'story' and give direction, or just let the shoot flow?
I would say it was more of an emotional expression than a story. We discussed and agreed on the various characters and setups beforehand, and then just jumped into them one by one and let the creativity flow. I would let Mickey start out and show me the ideas he had, and we would just go from there.

Which location was Mickey the most comfortable?
Mickey was by far the most comfortable in the cabin/woods locations. With a model's first shoot, there is always some level of nervousness at least initially, that is going to add some stress to the situation, but he was easily able to overcome that within the first hour or so of exterior photography. By the time of our second shoot, he was very "gung ho" about jumping right into it and going from character to character.

Intimate Portraits: Mickey by Shax Carter

'When I happen across a model that I enjoy working, I try to make them the focus of my independent work for a period of time.'

If you've followed my previous pieces spotlighting the work of photographer Shax Carter, you know he creates an intimate portrait of each of the models that he shoots.  Many photographers capture intimate moments, but Shax goes beyond just moments, capturing a more raw and in-depth depictions of not just a model, but a man.

We've all experienced meeting and interacting with someone for just a few hours.  For that period of time, if we're lucky, we uncover the first layer of a person.  The exterior layer, the layer they prepare for the pubic, for strangers, and those not intimate insiders within their lives.  This outer layer is well-crafted and practiced to deal with almost any and everyone they encounter.

By shooting models multiple times, over longer time span, a deeper relationship is formed between the artist and subject. Shax is able to peal beyond the surface and skin, capturing layers beneath, layers magnified beyond what's usually visible by the naked eye.  I've previously featured several models that Shax has spotlighted with his eye on a more raw and intimate portrait. some of you may remember my pieces on models; Atlas, (HERE) Nicko, (HERE:) and Jason. (HERE: & HERE:)

My recurrent use of the word raw is intentional.  It not only applies to the images captured, but to the men Shax chooses to shoot as well.  Most of the models Shax works with, including Mickey featured here, are new to modeling.  This experiences means their presentation and poses are not artificial or rehearsed.  There's an organic quality to their visual presentation, one created by their newness to modeling, and their first time posing nude.

'Mickey was 21, and brand new to modeling, although he said that he had wanted to try it out for a long time.  We met in Washington, for an afternoon introductory photo shoot.  Mickey was an absolute pleasure to work with.'

Because of the multiple shoots, and locations and scenarios shot, Shax usually ends up with hundreds of images from his work with one model.  This motivated Shax to begin creating photo books, chronicling his work, and modeling journey of the model in focus.  Shax has created two books featuring his work with Mickey, these images being from the first volume, and their first shoots together.

In addition to capturing visuals, Mickey's book also completes the intimate portrait, by also capturing Mickey's thoughts on the shooting process, and other details of his life and sexual awakening.  In the first volume, Mickey not only shares his motivation for giving modeling a try, but as well, his early sexual awakening, his first sexual experience, and his relationships with women, as well exploring his bi-curiosity.

I mean I enjoyed it, but I didn't see me going further into a relationship with him.  The farthest that I went with him was makin out, and I enjoyed that part, that wasn't bad, um, but we never did get into the intercourse, cause we didn't stay together that long.

You can preview more of the over 120 plus pages of Mickey One, Shax's first book spotlighting his work with Mickey on Blurb HERE:  You can also check back later this week for more images of Mickey and a preview of book two.

Stocking Stuffers:

KC

My favorite Christmas gifts have always been books, calendars, posters and photos.  I'm not a fan of getting or giving food, and I like to pick out clothes for myself.  Getting a good book however, especially one that I hadn't heard of, was a truly a great, and lasting present.

My bookshelves are full of books I was given, many with hand written messages from friends and relatives.  I treasure those gifts, especially now that I'm older.  Books aren't just a favorite gift to get, they're also a favorite gift to give.  Below are some of my favorite artists and some printed works from their collections.  Many are available only in hardcover editions, which may still get to you by the 25th.  Others are available in instant download versions which you can give to a friend, a loved one, or as a gift to yourself.

Industrial

I love the work of photographer Robert Colgan, and have been fortunate to have featured his work many time over the last 10 tens.  I especially love Robert's 'Industrial' work, blending the nude male form within industrial landscapes. The contrast is both erotic and visually fascinating.  The first part in a planned trilogy of books and themes, Robert's Industrial, was published earlier this year.

Raw Materials: Nicko by Shax Carter

'I have always found Nicko to be curious, as well as pretty daring and ambitious, and he was always up for a challenge.'

Almost everything we create starts with just the right raw materials. The 'raw' refers to something that's either unprocessed or in a minimally processed state.  Whenever I feature an artist's work, I try to find the quality that initially stood out and drew me to their work.  In the case of Shax Carter, it was how natural and raw his images looked and felt.

I felt it the first time I saw Shax's work with Jason, and in each of the shoots that I've featured on FH. (HERE:)  It's not that Shax doesn't edit touch up and edit his images, it's more that his process never hides or alters the innate qualities and raw sensuality of the men in front of his lens.

Many photographers edit the shit out of their images, making the model in front of their lens, almost unrecognizable.  It's almost as if they want to downplay the carnality, presenting hot naked men as if their puppies and kittens, and not a man, or a visual to be sexually desired.  Shax doesn't hide his models, or his artistic objective.  Shax wants you to desire the men he shoots,  without any obstructions hiding their naturally raw materials.

When first seeing Shax's work with Nicko, it was obvious the young model was comfortable in front of the camera.  He exudes a natural sexual energy in almost every shot.  This energy is present even when Nicko is clothed, it comes as much from pose, and Nicko's facial expressions. Although Shax certainly captured plenty of nudes, some of the most sensual shots of Nicko are those portrait shots, with his eyes, his lips and facial structure in focus.

'I first connected with Nicko through another model who knew him. At the time there was a group of models that all knew each other, and were friends. They often passed each other's names around and had occasionally worked along-side one another.'

'Nicko was a professional model at the time of our first meeting. He had a great spirit, and was always a pleasure to work with. Nicko was 22 when we began our two year working relationship. He consistently brought a lot of energy to each of our shoots, and wholly enjoyed the photographic process.'

Although he didn't initially intend to turn his work with the 22 year old Nicko into a book, after seeing the results of their creative collaboration, turned their multiple shoots in a 370 page print collection.  In addition to images of Nicko, other models join Nicko in some erotically raw and explicit, boundary pushing shots.

The book, Nicko, then..., is available in a hardcover edition, and an instant downloadable PDF version.  You can check out, and preview more on Blurb HERE:
