Photography By George: The In-Between

'My first experience photographing a nude model was with a female model.  I think I was more nervous than she was since it was my first nude shoot and she had been modeling nude for several years.'

They say that most of life happens during the in-between.  Those small, everyday moments that occur amid the bigger moments we tend to remember and commemorate visually.  Over time, the line between extraordinary, and smaller, everyday moments, is getting more and more blurred.  With everyone having a camera phone, even the smallest minutiae of our daily lives is chronicled and  posted on social media.

This blurring of lines, also happens with art, especially with the photography of the naked human form. As much as I love to celebrate well shot, carefully planned and edited final images, regular FH readers also know I love spotlighting the in-between.  Those unplanned, behind the scenes moments that many photographer don't publish, and usually end up deleting.

Those moments of a model's arrival, dressing or undressing, showering or just relaxing or taking a smoke break.  On many shoots, there are often pauses between official shooting times.  Short moments when the photographer is working on a new set-up, moving equipment, or adjusting a light.  Because I love to  share process, and tell the stories behind a shoot, the story isn't necessarily complete without also sharing those moments in-between.

Photography by George, aka Traveling Bare, is a great example of who I consider a nude documentarian.  Although George certainly captures form portraits and body shots, he also visually documents the entire session, often with a focus on the in-between.  This makes a bit of sense as George lives much of his life straddling the in-between.  George is both a photographer and a model, spending time both shooting nudes, and posing nude himself for photographers, painters and in classes surrounded by art students.

The in-between extends to George's sexual preferences and his choice of models.  As a bi-optical artist, George shoots both men and women, and loves to explore the lines, curves and bodies of both the male and female form.  I know a lot of photographers, especially in fashion, shoot both men and women, but most seem to have a preference.  George truly doesn't.  His portfolio is packed with both men and women, with clear love, and fetish filled passions for both.  George also loves sharing his work, as much as he enjoys sharing with FH, he's currently looking for site that would welcome his work with women.

When I asked George about featuring his in-between work, he sent me a folder with hundreds of images from his years of shooting male models.  These, are some of my favorites.  Some of the models featured here may look familiar, as I've spotlighted several of them previously in induvial posts on the site.  Some, are making their FH debut.  I've interviewed George previously about his work both a nude model and a photographer, but today, is all about the in-between.

Are you currently shooting?
I’d like to be currently shooting but not having any luck finding models. My 2 most recent shoots were both with chronicling the physical changes with a pregnant woman.

Are you looking to start up again?
I’m always looking.  I'm going to be in San Francisco later this month, August 12-14th, and am currently looking for other photographers, and models, both male and female, to collaborate with.

If you had a hot modeling wanting to shoot tomorrow, what theme would you explore?
With a Female model, a Fem Fatale foot fetish, open legged spread, and labia.  With a male model, I'd hope for some erection with cum shots.

Are most of your shoots at your home, or the homes of others?
My home, the model's home, if not, usually at a hotel or out in nature

Does shooting at home, instead of studio impact a model's comfort level?
I think and hope that I make them comfortable regardless of the location

I have hundreds of photography books in my collection. Artist and photography books, and nude anthology collections of both male and female nudes. I often use photography books as props to relax and hopefully inspire my models both male and female.

For men, do you plan and discuss erection shots before a shoot?
Not usually, but about 50% of my male models get hard at some point during the shoot

Have you experienced an unplanned erection when you were modeling?
Yes, when modeling for photography and occasionally when posing for life drawing classes particularly when I was younger

Mirrors are often used in George's work.  The help both reflect on, and challenge societal views on the nude human form, especially in media and art.  If you look closely at the image above, you'll see the artist in the mirror's reflection.

Have you had any models have any embarrassing moments during a shoot you can share?
The closest to an embarrassing moment was when a female model accidentally broke a garden ornament when changing her pose. Fortunately I was able to glue it back together.

Can you think of any favorite moments that happened during a 'behind the scenes moment'
Well yes, there have been memorable interactions with models off camera during breaks or at the conclusion of the shoot.  Some male models have also asked for a little 'assistance' while shooting.

There was also the time I was shooting a female model in her home.  Her husband arrived home early from work unexpectedly in the middle of our shoot. He was totally cool about it and actually stripped off and posed with her.

You can check out more of George's answers on the in-between, this time, with a focus on just one male model, the incredibly hot Nolan, (below) on the NEXT PAGE HERE:
