Just Because: Gays Against Gaga
'Sometimes it is difficult to find words to make a critique when we find ourselves attracted by some aspect of a performer’s act and disturbed by others, or when a performer shows more interest in promoting progressive social causes than is customary. We may see that performer as above critique. Or we may feel our critique will in no way intervene on the worship of them as a cultural icon. To say nothing, however, is to be complicit…'
Gays against Gaga
Not sure how I feel about this site GAG, but when someone posted the link on Facebook yesterday I was intrigued. I enjoy Gaga (don't LOVE her, do enjoy her and see her talent) but... there have been times the confusion in her message has bugged the shit out me (that meat dress and gay marriage link is still suspect...).
I felt the same way about Madonna, both she and Gaga are seen by many as CHAMPIONS of gay causes but don't you, just every once in awhile, question whether they and their marketing machine, saw us the best way to make tons of money (we due spend a lot and are very loyal!).
Don't throw rotten tomato's, I am still on the fence but, just because...it is interesting.

I think you gotta add Kathy Whatsherface to that list. You know who I'm talking about, the red head who's main talent is insulting people. "From the D list."
Every time I hear about her saying "My Gays" I just want somebody to smack the shit out of her. It worked for Margaret Cho because lets face it, Margaret Cho has talent, Kathy Whatsherface, not so much.
It truly bothers me when gay people jump on somebody's band wagon just because they're gay or gay friendly. What about talent? That should matter most.
Gaga seems like she's mostly gimics, marketing is her main talent. Whatsherface has mostly insults and very little creativity.
We as a community seem to forget the old axiom of "To thine own self, be true." just because somebody says they are gay or have a gay friend. I mean really, how many rupert wainwright or adam lambert CDs do you own? as opposed to George Michael, Elton John or Melissa Ethridge CDs.
These days we have a new wanna-be type.
Just a thought.
great post. anti-gaga fag right here.
It's funny, I was talking about this with some friends last night and I said the same, she got the gay market in her pocket and that's a VERY good market. She's always talking about gay this and gay that and I found this as a very good formula to be in every disco and getting her shows full. I don't think Madonna was that annoying, she knew she was a gay icon but never tried so hard as gaga.
It's good to know not all gay guys follow gaga just because she "loves us".
Gaga started her career in gay clubs and was supported by the gay community from the get-go. Now she's paying homage back to the people who have raised her to where she is. What other personality in entertainment is as vocal about gay equality as Gaga? She has gone against mainstream perceptions toward gays and has given the gays the credit for her fame. And her fame is not undeserved. She is a wonderful performer who can actually sing, has a brain, and knows how to be successful while giving 100% credit to the gay community and even so STILL continues to be successful.
In 20 years, we'll look back and realize that Gaga and especially "Born This Way" can be credited for a huge cultural shift in opinion in America and the world. That shift will be toward tolerance and acceptance and many people realizing that we are in fact born this way. This is what gays against Gaga need to realize. And honestly, I think these people only dislike her because it's goes against the mainstream. Being subversive just to be subversive is so overrated.
She doesn't go against the mainstream, I don't like her cause she is too popular, she's everywhere. She's too much Britney Spears meets Madonna. If she'd have her own style maybe it would be nice, but everything sounds and looks too superficial. Maybe that's why she is good with a big amount of gays.
