'An erotic cat and mouse game set in an all-boys' prep school.'
When I was looking for a movie with an all Asian cast to feature this Lunar New Year, I didn't have to look far. I had watched the 2007 Japanese filmed Schoolboy Crush this past summer and was going to post about it then. I decided to wait until the fall, then held off again until Lunar New Year.
The film, written and directed by Kôtarô Terauchi, is the successor of the 2006 film. Boys Love. In the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, it was released with the title Schoolboy Crush. The film is sort of a Cruel Intentions, with an all male, and all hot cast. The film opens with introducing us to Kaori, (Yoshikazu Kotani) a handsome man who has hired Sora, (Atsumi Kanno) a young male prostitute. Kaori isn't in a good place and shares with Sora that he's recently lost the love of his life.
Cut to the all male Seagal boarding school where Kaori teaches. Kaori is more than a little shocked when Sora enters his classroom as a new student. Kaori is worried that Sora will share his secret, and Sora plays with his power, teasing and playing games with his teacher.
Kaori however, isn't the only one in a tizzy over Sora's arrival. Both his roommate Ichiyu, (Yuuki Kawakubo) and the school bully Riku, (Kazunori Tani) are also drawn to the new student. Sora juggles all of the attention well for awhile, but soon things take a dark turn.
Although the relationship between student and teacher launches the drama, for me, it was the two supporting characters, Ichiyu and Riku that really drew me into the story. Like so many, I'm drawn to a bad boy, and although all four leads are both talented and beautiful, I was especially crushing over Kazunori Tani as Riku.
If you've never seen a Japanese film, I highly recommend trying to find a copy of this movie. Although I watched with subtitles, the story is easy to follow, thanks to the well written script, direction and performances by the four male cast members. There is really only fleeting nudity, most in the locker room after the characters play rugby. There is however, an erotic intensity that flows through the entire film.
