Swan Song? DirtRoad by Noplacia Photography


Since first discovering his work back in 2013, model and photographer DirtRoad, (Warren Russell) has become one of my favorite artists to cover.  Warren is both incredibly sexy and incredibly creative, but these two attributes are only two small pieces of why I have been so drawn to Warren's images.


I also love the quiet pleasure Warren brings to his work.  I use the word 'quiet' with purpose.  Warren is an exhibitionist for sure, but one who channels his passion into creating images that share  and blend his beliefs and values.  I feel such respect from Warren's images.  Respect for his body, and respect for the every thing, around him.  This is especially true when Warren is shooting outside, in a field, in the woods, or or a long abandoned cabin or shed.


Warren's images don't scream 'look at me, look at me', instead, he shares his work, and his body, calmly and peacefully with those that might enjoy and appreciate the results of his creativity, and his message.


Warren sent out another message at the beginning of the summer, one not as emotionally pleasing as the ones that had come before it.  Warren had taken a new job, one that had him working on stop and one that wasn't allowing him much time to pursue modeling and photography.  Warren said he was so busy, that he barely had time to eat or focus on his body.  He was losing weight and thought that it might be time to retire from modeling.


Warren graciously gave support for me to continue to dip into his vast catalogue of work to share. One of photographers who shares so beautifully Warren's artist goals in Gary Larson from Noplacia Photography.  In addition to Warren's self portraits, I have featured the Seattle model's work with Gary more than any other artist.   Sadly, they no longer live in the same State, but Gary promises he has many more shoots, some never published, that I look forward to seeing in the future.


I had seen a few shots from Gary's kickingboxing 'shadow' series with Warren before, but last month Warren released more from the series on his tumblr.  This set taps into the talents of both photographer and model and I love how shadow was used, especially in some of the black and white and erection shots.


Warren's erection doesn't seem forced for a shot, but simply a natural response to what's happening. It was also shot by Gary just like every other part that was creating a beautiful line, and a beautiful shadow, that needed to be captured.


I have asked Warren to consider heading out to the woods, maybe one last time, for a shoot for FH. Warren has promised to look for a time that he might be able to fit that in.  I am hoping there still may be a new shoot or two down that beautiful dirtroad that Warren has welcome me, and all readers of FH, to join him on.

10: DirtRoad by Noplacia


'My own skin fits better than the latest fashions.'


Warren Ruseell's (DirtRoad) quote above is one of the the reasons I keep going back to his work. Warren's comfortably, not just in front of the camera, but in his own skin, translates strongly through his images to the viewer. Seeing Warren naked in the woods, naked on the train tracks or naked in a field of flowers, doesn't just inspire erotic fantasy's about Warren's body, but about your own. Seeing Warren's images has me wanting and dreaming of losing my own inhibitions and finding a field of my own.


'I’ve always been the artistic type. I model because I enjoy it. I’d rather go for a walk barefoot in the forest than see the sights in the city. When it comes to modeling, I would rather make people feel something than want to buy something. Keep it natural, keep it real. Steer away from the consumerism and appreciate what’s really there.'


This piece marks Warren's 14th piece on FH and the 7th FH feature from Warren's work with photographer Gary Larson from Noplacia Photography. Gary sent on these beautiful early shots of Warren showering and shaving, daily life events that are a staple of Warren's images.


'I didn't do anything with this shoot because the lighting in the bathroom was challenging, and I could have made better decisions with my camera settings; however, Warren did a great job. The photos were taken from the second of eight shoots we did. Second shoots typically are the best shoots because the model and I know more what to expect from each other.'


'Our first shoot involved a lot of typical poses from my catalogue of classical poses and some shots of Warren and his trademark prop, an ax.
Warren showed up to the second shoot with a bag of underwear, a ton of confidence, and sexual energy. After trying on a bunch of the underwear, i asked him to put on a white towel and come do some shots in the bathroom.'

A Baker's Dozen: DirtRoad

One of the reasons I continue with FH is the thrill of the find.   Scrolling through a site or turning an on-line page to find an artist, a model, an image that excites and stimulates my creative senses.  It's even more intriguing when I sense there's a story to be told.  That's exactly how I felt when I stumbled upon DirtRoad's Model Mayhem page back in 2013.


The images, were of DirtRoad in an old barn, naked, and holding an axe.  I loved DirtRoad's look and the erotic and sinister feel to the shoot.  I immediately reached out about a feature and asked who the photographer was so that I could get in touch..  DirtRoad replied quickly, and shared the images were self shots and welcomed a piece on the site.


Since that first piece, (To The Woodshed!) I've been fortunate to have featured DirtRoad's work over 15 times.  I've featured both his self-shots, and his work with other photographers, most notably, close to ten stories featuring his collaborations with Gary Larson from Noplacia Photography.  Although sadly Warren retired from modeling in 2017, he stepped back in front of the lens to shoot a snow series of self shots exclusively for FH. Gary and DirtRoad's work together has been one of my favorite artist and model creative collaborations to watch, and feature over the years of working on the site.  They worked together close to a dozen times, most of which, Gary graciously shared with me to feature.  I think I featured almost all of their shoots, but my fingers remained crossed Gary might stumble upon a shoot or images I haven't seen before....  Until then, or until DirtRoad makes a modeling return, there's an incredible array of images in the previous pieces on the site.

At Home in the Forest: DirtRoad by Noplacia Photography


'I find self portraits interesting since every decision is made by one person, the model. However, it is also fascinating to see what Warren comes up with when he isn't having to run over and deal with the camera.'


Some of you remember that I mentioned in a previous piece that photographer Gary Larson from Noplacia Photography had moved from Washington awhile ago. This meant he would be no longer living close to one mine, and one of FH's models, Warren Russell. Gary promised however to share his archive of shoots with FH, and has done so in 9 previous pieces. (listed below) This the tenth of the archive is sadly the last.


Although Warren has appeared in several other pieces, both with other photographers, an with his self portraits, it is sort of apropos that this shoot would be the 10th archive piece from Gary, in FH's 10th year. Gary is still hoping it's not his last shoot with Warren and plans on connecting when is back visiting in the Washinton area.


It is also appropriate that this shoot takes us back into the woods. Although I loved many of Warren's studio shoots, the first time I discovered his imagery, he was outside and some of my favorites from his portfolio feature him out in the Forrest. Warren seems at home in the woods, far from whatever stress's might be weighing him down. Warren is also at home sans clothing, and the forest is truly a beautiful place to be naked and connect with nature, and with one's self.


Although Gary and Warren had done some outdoor shoots, and gotten some great images previously, mostly near Gary's home in Bellevue, WA, Warren suggested they try out some places he knew about in order to get the full outdoor experience. Gary's images beautifully capture Warren's feeling of being naked, and outside in the forests that he loves.


As he peels off his jeans and rips off the rest of the clothing that binds him, Warren reminds me of kid ho had been cooped up in school all day, and is finally outside, free to run and play. I especially love Gary's images of Warren in the tree's and on the logs. You can almost feel the roughness of the bark, and the coolness of the moss as it connects with Warren's skin.


'I had seen the beautiful self portraits he did in those places and was really happy to see what I could do during our fist full outdoor shoot.'
