Flexed: Joey by Jack Saul Photography

'I guess the big advantage with shooting in London is the multi-cultural aspect, giving a choice of models from literally all around the world.'

Without a home studio, photographer Jack Saul is often on the road, traveling to shoot.  Thus far however, he's only shot in London and surrounding areas.  It's not that he' hasn't tried though.  On a recent trip to the Netherlands, finding locations made shooting difficult, but Jack did connect with several models, building contacts for future trips to the area.

As for shooting in London, Jack shares that from his experience, finding models goes through phases sometimes.  Sometimes it's easier to find models than at other times due to a variety of circumstances. When it came to shooting Joey, Jack had a little help from a friend, one of Joey's friends.   Joey is a good friend of Robbie, a model whose work with Jack, I've previously featured on the site. (HERE:) Joey sort of fell into modeling after a sports injury and he and Robbie had worked together before.

As tight and toned as Joey's incredible physique certainly is, as often happens, it was his face that initially drew me to his images and to reach out to Jack.  It's a handsome and beautiful face for sure, but Joey also expresses an almost melancholy vibe through his expressive brown eyes.  There is something incredibly captivating and charming to me, about Joey's seemingly serious facial expressions along with his incredibly hot body.  Jack shares that Joey certainly wasn't sad or melancholy during there shoot.

'Joey's a naturally reserved character but he really warmed up once we got going, and really got to know each other.'

One of the things I noticed, and one of the things that made me smile, was Joey's 'go to pose'.  Not sure if you've noticed yet, but Jack often captured Joey flexing.  It's not surprising given how toned his arms are, but it's a pose I know many of us remember well.  Even if we didn't do it ourselves, (and I did) there is always someone in every friend group who flexes in every photo.

Sometimes frequent flexing is a habit, sometimes it's nerves.  Other times, like with Joey, it comes from being asked to flex by photographers for all the promotional photos taken during his time athlete.  I didn't ask Jack about Joey's sexuality, nor do I care, but it seems to be something straight guys sometimes do when a camera comes out.  I know my little brother took the flex pose each and every time anyone started taking pictures, it was almost automatic, when a camera came out, the arms instinctively went up.

It's rather endearing really, my little brother did when he was a little kid, and still does it today.  Maybe it's because of my brother, but I found it sort of sweet and endearing with Joey as well.   I didn't initially make the connection, but realized when I  narrowed down the images for this piece.  Although Jack took hundreds of great images of Joey not flexing, I kept coming back, and eventually choosing, so many with him with the flex pose.

I think my favorite shot from Jack's work with  Joey is the image below.  I'm not sure if this was at the beginning, or near the end of the shoot, but Joey looks so relaxed with his eyes closed on the bed.  He also looks incredibly hot!  I love the pose and mood Jack set and I also really loved the visual contrast of the more serious, or reserved side of Joey I described above, and the softer, warmer side the image displays.
