Arnold Schwarzenegger go this his start in show business due to body building. After gaining attention for the 1977 documentary Pumping Iron, Schwarzenegger followed fellow body builders like Reg Park, (who played Hercules) playing the pumped up sword and sorcery hero Conan The Barbarian in 1982. Alessandro Nivola, took a bit of a different, but maybe more traditional route to the silver screen. .
After graduating from Yale University with a BA in English in 1994, he made his Broadway debut opposite Helen Mirren in A Month in the Country The role earned Nivola a Drama Desk Award nomination. Later that year he also starred opposite Gwyneth Paltrow in the 1995 Williamstown Theater Festival production of Shakespeare's As You Like It.
Nivola quickly began getting small roles on Television and in film. (Inventing The Abbott's) It was in 1997 however, that he brought his breakthrough performance as Nicolas Cage's brother Pollux Troy in John Woo's 1997 feature film Face/Off.
Nivola is a multifaceted actor, moving between playing leading me, and character roles as well as moving seamlessly between movies, television and the stage. Some of you who my not have known his name, certainly have seen his work. Nivola has worked in small, independent films and huge box office hits. Yet, unlike Schwarzenegger who plays basically one character, over and over, Nivola is more of chameleon, Like many great actors, his versatility has kept him working steadily since his entry into the business.
In addition to Face/Off, some of Nivola's films that I'm guessing many have seen include; Junebug, Mansfield Park, The Sister, Laurel Canyon, Selma, The Boston Strangler, and Jurassic Park III. Most recently Nivola appeared in The Brutalist, The Room Next Door and will be featured in the next, and last, Downton Abbey film.
I think it was the actors turn as musician Ian, and his fiery romance with Jane, (Francis McDormand) in the 2002 drama Laurel Canyon, that first introduced me to Nivola. I watched the film for McDormand and Christian Bale, but it was a scene with a naked Nivola, moving slowly across the screen on a pool floaty, that stuck in my memory. Check some of my favorite nude scenes below.
Like Christian Bale in the scene above, many of us did a double take seeing Alessandro naked on the pool floaty.
Like so many actors, Nivola's first nude scene for me, is his most memorable. There are a lot of love scenes featuring a good looking actor' bare butt. The scene below, from 1998's I Want You, is one of the hottest. I love how Nivola starts off dressed, but quickly gets out of pants and undies and his beautiful butt, never stops moving.
