Victor Constantin by Mark Leighton

I cannot believe that FH is in it's fifth year and I have not done a profile of the work of photographer Mark Leighton. I think I felt I already had... I have loved Mark's work for awhile, he was one of a handful of photographers who I searched for before google, on excite and yahoo, when I first got online. I think his work, shooting men on the incredible scenic beaches of Lagos, in Portugal, that began a passion for seeking out images beyond the studio.

The beaches of Lagos are so much more than sand beneath and sun above. The surroundings are breathtakingly unique with extraordinary rock and cliff formations that almost look like time has stood beautifully still.

I think those beaches have become a welcomed fixture within my consciousness, and another reason I thought I must have profiled Mark's before now. Several models have sent work through images of their time with Mark on those beaches. I have also been fortunate to have profiled the work of Mark Montovio from Mount Photography. Montovio, besides being a good friend of Leighton's, usually visits Portugal, along with several models, once a year and the two artists shoot their subjects in the water, and along those beaches together.

When contacting Mark about a profile, I first had to pick a subject. Sometimes when I profile an artist I like to choose a selection of my favorite shots from their portfolio. Other times, I like to choose a model that I think sums up what I love best about their imagery. With Mark, his work with model Victor Constantin did just that. Mark says that Victor is the only model who lives locally so they have had the opportunity to shoot several times. Although I included a couple of shots of Victor on the beach, their latest collaboration, with Victor on the bed certainly caught my eye. The shots with the red sheets and apple are both innocent and erotic and tantalizingly naughty.

The mix of naughty and nice stems from Victor's beautiful face, hazel eyes and incredible lips. He exudes both venerability and a knowing strength through his eyes and facial expressions. Although just 19 he seems to know exactly what he wants.

'I first saw him when he was working as a summer waiter at a restaurant. I could see he had a great look about him but he seemed quite shy, so I didn't ask him if he wanted to model until I had visited the restaurant a few times. By then, I had seen he had a dazzling smile and was interested in fashion, so I thought I would risk it and ask him. He was very enthusiastic and we arranged a shoot.'

'After just a few shots he settled in and was very comfortable with the camera and was good at taking direction. Needless to say, I could see he was very photogenic. Each time we have shot he has made more progress as a model and at the last shoot was more sensual and we worked on getting some more expression - facially and with the body.'

Quaternate: Mark Leighton

'As a photographer, I really enjoy working with models that want to connect with the camera and not just look good for it.'

One of the reasons I both love, and continue to return to the work of photographer Mark Leighton is his focus on connection.  Not only the connection between the model with the camera and viewer, but also the connection between the model and incredible locations that make up Mark's seascape studios.

Although my first official story featuring Mark's work was with the apple temping Victor back in 2012, his work first appeared on FH a few years earlier.  In addition to showcasing Mark's images as some of my favorite pic of the day's,  personal trainer David Costas also sent on images of his work with Mark in 2009. (HERE:)

As incredibly beautiful and diverse as the models Mark works with are, it's also the breathtaking locations in Portugal that are a primary component within Mark's work.  Although most of the pieces I've done feature Lagos and Algarve, Mark has also shared images from shoots he's created while traveling.

Mark's images capture so many of the elements we associate with beachside locations and community.  Sand, sun and the ocean have the power to both calm as well as energize.  Mark captures both of these states of beings within his work.  Mark is known for his incredible shots of models running along sandy beaches, climbing rocks and playing in the surf and waves.  In addition, unique tranquility brought about by the sun's intense rays on bare, wet skin is also a part of so much of Mark's work.  I did an entire series back in 2014, spotlighting that feeling of serenity at the end of a long day.

Forbidden Fruit

The apple was never actually mentioned in the bible, instead it was referred to simply as the forbidden fruit.  It was through art, through books poems, and especially in paintings that had the apple become the symbol of the forbidden fruit and of temptation.

When I was thinking of images to represent the apple, and temptation, I thought back to this series with Victor by photographer Mark Leighton. Victor is not only one of my favorite models that Mark has worked with, he's also one of the first that I featured on the site.  I believe Victor first appeared on FH back in 2012. (HERE:)

At The End Of The Day: Victor by Mark Leighton

'That feeling, usually at the end of the day, work is done and you're home. Your shoes, and often your clothes, are off and on the floor, and you're free from the stresses of the day... Even if just temporarily, for the next eight, ten or twelve hours you're time is your. The sensation of both beautiful relaxation and erotic freedom.'

I took a slight pause with At The End Of The Day when I began my 12 Days of Christmas series. Thanks to photographer Mark Leighton however, there are still a couple of models left to help heat up the end of these cold January evenings. I have been fortunate to have featured Mark's work with Victor before, a local model Mark discovered working as a summer waiter at a restaurant. Early into his first shoot with Mark, Victor became quickly comfortable in front of the lens, and as you can tell, with his great face, and beautiful eyes, the camera loved him.

At The End of The End of The Day: Joel by Mark Leighton

'That feeling, usually at the end of the day, work is done and you're home. Your shoes, and often your clothes, are off and on the floor, and you're free from the stresses of the day... Even if just temporarily, for the next eight, ten or twelve hours you're time is your. The sensation of both beautiful relaxation and erotic freedom.'

It is beautifully appropriate that Joel headlines the eighth, and final, installment of Mark Leighton's At The End Of The Day. Although Mark and I officially began the series back in November with Shane, it was two stories I did last August with Joel, (A Layover in Lagos & Sans Sand) that stimulated the idea.

Joel's look is ethereal, beautiful body, incredible hair, great face and lips and piercing blue eyes that draw your attention in each of Mark's images. Joel's coloring looks amazing on both the mauve (I hope it's mauve) bedspread or laying in and under the blues and green's of the water of Algarve where the shoot occured.

I want to thank Mark Leighton for all the incredible images he sent on for the series. With all of the incredible models and images Mark sent on, what was supposed to be a one off piece because an eight part series which deffinately brightened up this east coast blogger over this freezing and snow filled winter!

If you missed out on any of the series, you can check out all of the men who helped our days, Shane, Jacopo, M Smit, Miguel, Ashleigh, Victor, Chris & now Joel, here At The End Of The Day.
