Blast from the Past: Jim Youngs

I had never seen 1986's Youngblood until last week.  Sure, I downloaded the scene of Rob Lowe in a jockstrap, but that was the only scene that I'd seen.  Last week I saw it playing on my on demand 80's movie channel and decided to DVR.  I'm glad I did.

In addition to Lowe's gratuitous jock strap scene, there were also many moments of hot men.  The film also featured Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves and an actor I'd seen before, but not really focused on until seeing this film,  The gorgeous Jim Youngs played Kelly Youngblood, the older brother of Rob's character Dean.  Although he only had a handful of scenes, Youngs was a highlight.  Not only was his character pivotal in getting Dean back on the ice, Youngs beautiful face and sexy eighties hair had me wanting to see and find out more.

The Secrets of Midland Heights (1980)

Youngs got his big break in the late 70's starring along side Ken Wahl in The Wanderers. (1979)  He went on to appear on television in TV movies including The Executioners Song, Splendor in the Grass and the short lived prime-time soap The Secrets of Midland Heights.  The nighttime drama was cashing in on the success of Dallas and also featured Linda Hamilton and Lorenzo Lamas.

Youngs was back on the big screen in 1983 and had supporting roles in a string of box office hits including Youngblood, Hotshot and as Lori Singer's boyfriend in Footloose.  Incredibly talented, good looking and charismatic, Youngs roles on screen began to diminish as the 80's went on. By the time the 90's rolled around, Youngs was back doing guest shots on television including roles with former co-star Wahl on Wiseguy, and turns on NYPD Blue, Babylon 5 and Silk Stalkings.

Hotshot (1986)

Youngs last official credit was sadly back in 1995.  It's always difficult to understand why some actors, especially those as talented as Youngs hit a wall, especially have his string of hits.  There were rumors of projects in 2012, but thus far, nothing has made it past the pre-production stage.

Footloose (1984)

In researching Youngs, I could only come up with one nude scene, and it's not the greatest.  Youngs had a brief flash of butt in the 1985 teen drama Out of Control.  You can check it out on the NEXT PAGE HERE:

Jim Youngs in Out of Control

Upon graduation from high school eight teens take a seaplane trip, intending to celebrate on Keith's parents' private island. Stormy weather causes the plane to crash and they end up on a deserted isle. They find evidence of other visitors, and soon must fend for their lives against drug smugglers.

In 1985's Out of Control, actor Jim Youngs plays Cowboy, one of the eight teens stranded on the private Island.  Longs stars alongside Martin Hewitt, Betsy Russell and Sherilyn Fenn.

If you're going to throw together a group of hot teens on an island, you need to ensure there's plenty of alcohol, and that's exactly what they find.  There night of partying leads to most of them removing their clothes.  Although one actor (Richard Kantor) takes off his pants, it's mostly the female cast members who are focused on.  We do get Youngs down to his tighty whites.

The love scene, and flashes of Youngs hot backside is a frustrating scene to watch.  It's one of those 80's music filled and overedited love scenes.  Although Betsy Russell's breasts get their close-up, goosebumps and all, we get just a quick side glance at Young' behind.

Archives: Blast From The Past

Peter Barton

When I started FH, one of my goals was to only featured some of today's hottest and most talented hunks, but also feature men who impacted my, and others in the past.  So many sites are all about the men of the moment, the current and hottest bodies and moments.  As we all know however, it's hard to stay front burner for too long, at least not without burning out.

Blast From The Past began as my way of spotlighting some of the models, actors and singers who I grew u with.  It soon became so much more.   Although I had connections with many of the men that I featured, I also included actors who I discovered later in life.  There are many actors, who I either didn't like or didn't notice that I looked at differently when I got older.

When I was a kid, I remember thinking that Tom Selleck was sort of 'gross'.  He seemed old, and I hated his moustache, and how hairy he was.  Then... when I hit my thirties, I started looking back on all those shirtless shots of Selleck with a different perspective...   There are also several classic stars from the 40's, 50's and 60's that I never heard of when I was a kid.  Thanks To TCM, I quickly began crushing over actors, many of whom are in their 80's, 90's or no longer with us at all.

This list includes most of those actors, performers, singers and models that I've blasted back to the past with.  I say most, as there are many former heart throbs who showed up in my birthdays or movie section that I have yet to include.  I hope to add them in once I have time to fully research the blog, but this list is a pretty good beginning.   Looking back at some of the posts, especially those from the site's early days, I realize many need an update.  Some were done before I had the ability to cap and create images on my own, and before learning how enlarge an image.  Hoping to update a few of my favorites soon.

Hey Pretty Boy...

To Youngblood, winning wasn't everything - proving himself was.

Sooo... there's a hazing scene near the beginning of 1986's Youngblood. In the locker room, 17 year old Dean Youngblood (Rob Lowe) is grabbed by his teammates, held down and stripped.  Then, teammate Derek Sutton, (Patrick Swayze) uses a jock-strap as a doctor's mask, picks up a scalpel, then shaves off Dean's pubic hair.

I have seen bits and pieces from the 1986 Peter Markle directed film many times, especially the scene with Rob Lowe in a jock strap.  I hadn't however, actually seen the movie in it's entirety until last weekend.  I think I avoided watching the flick thinking it was a sports movie.   I'm a big sports fan, especially hockey, a game I played, but I usually don't get into sport focused films.  This film, really wasn't a sports movie.

I was actually pretty surprised how blatantly homoerotic Youngblood actually was.  The first thirty minutes looked as if it was directed by David DeCoteau.  Shirtless locker room scenes, towel snaps, jockstraps and tons of close-ups of Rob Lowe dripping with sweat.  The second half of the movie was a bit more straightforward with it's hockey focus, but the first half was all about getting as many hot shots and angles of the leads pretty face and body as they possibly could.

I have to admit, although I've always thought Rob Lowe was handsome, I never really appreciated his beauty until recently.  When I was a kid watching his 80's films on VHS, I usually preferred his co-stars.  I was more into Andrew McCarthy than Lowe who I didn't really think was especially talented.  He was hot no doubt, but the fact he seemed to know it was a bit of a turn off.  Like so many actors however, my appreciation for Lowe, as an actor, and as object of lust, has grown as I've gotten older.

Lowe isn't the only hottie in the film.  In addition to Lowe and Swayze, Youngblood also featured Keanu Reeves and Jim Youngs, (who I previously featured HERE:) as Lowe's older brother. Although Dean Youngblood has a female love interest, (Cynthia Gibb) the main relationship, well, the one that gets the homoerotic bonding montages, are between Lowe and Swayze.

If you want to see more from the film, including Lowe's embarrassment scene in just his wet jock-strap, check out the NEXT PAGE HERE:
